These 5 Countries Account for 60% of Plastic Pollution in Oceans

Roughly 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into the world's oceans every year, and according to a new study, the majority of this waste comes from just five countries: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

It's projected that by 2025, plastic consumption in Asia will increase by an astonishing 80 percent to surpass 200 million tons. And unless steps are taken to manage this waste properly, in ten short years the ocean could contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish, "an unthinkable outcome," the study says.It appears that these five countries are responsible for up to 60 percent of the marine plastic entering our oceans, according to Stemming the Tide, a study released last month by the Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment.

Why are these parts of Asia leaking so much plastic? Well, as the study suggests, these emerging countries are experiencing rapid economic growth, reduced poverty and improved quality of life. This development is, of course, fantastic. However, as these economies grow, so does the consumer use of plastic and plastic-intensive goods.

The caveat of this increased plastic demand is that these countries do not yet have waste-management infrastructures that can tackle the accompanying excess waste.

It makes sense then, as Fast Company observed from the study, that global ocean plastic clean-up efforts should initially be concentrated in these areas.

"Specifically, interventions in these five countries could reduce global plastic-waste leakage by approximately 45 percent over the next ten years," the report says.

The study's authors came up with the five best approaches (out of 21) to address plastic waste, customized for each country: collection services, closing leakage points in collection facilities, gasification (converting waste into fuel) and MRF-recylcing (diverting plastic from the waste stream).

"Coordinated action in just these five countries could significantly reduce the global leakage of plastic waste into the ocean by 2025," the report says.

"This study outlines a path that can generate considerable benefits to communities, preserve the bio-productivity of the ocean, and reduce risks for industry," the report says. "Concerted action in the form of a $5 billion annual ramp-up in waste-management spending could create a vibrant secondary resource market, trigger investment in packaging and recovery systems, and let the ocean thrive."

"Of course, extending these interventions to other countries could have even more impact on this global issue," the report points out.

Plastic waste in the Philippines, for instance, is having "drastic consequences on the livelihoods and health of the people of Dagupan," said city mayor Belen Fernandez in a press release for the study.

“Our town has had a dump site on our beach for over 50 years," he continued about the coastal Philippine city. "We're working hard to close the dump, and increase the capacity of waste management in Dagupan. Addressing the problem of ocean plastic will have real benefits for not just the environment, but for our citizens—by improving their quality of life. I hope our city and our work will become a model for what's possible around the world."

Andreas Merkl, CEO of Ocean Conservancy, said in a statement that the study is the first to outline a specific path forward for the reduction and ultimate elimination of plastic waste in the oceans.

“The report's findings confirm what many have long thought—that ocean plastic solutions actually begin on land. It will take a coordinated effort of industry, NGOs and government to solve this growing economic and environmental problem," he said.

Sort of ironic that a group of countries that largely depend on the oceans for their food are the worst polluters. Apparently they never heard the saying "Don't shit where you eat".

[–]IdiotsApostrophe 24 points 8 days ago
Not really. The people in the mountains produce most of the trash found in mountains. The people by the sea produce most of the trash in the sea. Everyone shits where they eat at this scale. I agree everyone should take care of their surroundings. But it shouldn't be a surprise that most ocean plastic comes from island countries and countries with massive shorelines.

The figures don't really support that theory.

[–]DNPenileFracture 6 points 8 days ago
you (both) have to consider population density, otherwise that figure is meaningless

[–]leonryan 6 points 8 days ago
I agree, but England has high density for a small island and isn't among the top 5. Mexico is densely populated with a lot of coastline and it's not there either. I just don't think lots of coast + lots of people = lots of shit in the sea in all cases.

England isn't an island. England is one of 3 countries on the island of Great Britain.

Sorry to be a pedant, but as a Scot people using England and Britain/UK interchangeably gets to me.

These are countries that until very recently used human waste as fertilizer. And I would bet still do in some places.

Nothing wrong with "night soil". Just make sure its not getting into the water supply. I know in N.America we spay Liquid Pig waste on the fields, and spread cow manure from the feedlots on them too. It's just our sensibilities that give us that ick factor.

I'm slowly sailing around the world. Currently in Thailand. I haven't sailed off China, Vietnam, or the Philippines; but, Indonesia was shocking. After spending several years in the beautiful Pacific Islands, I was stunned by the rubbish in the water around much of Indonesia. They are the world's 4th largest population and only a few islands seem to have any system for collecting garbage. Most islands just throw trash into open sewers which gets washed down into the ocean by rain.

There is so much trash in some places that you can confuse floating garbage bags with fishing floats. You spend a lot of time dodging all the crap. That said, some places in Indonesia are wonderful and it covers a huge area.

Thailand waters are much better than Indonesia at least on the west coast. However, it's a far cry from the Pacific.

It truly breaks my heart to see how bad things are. There is generally poor water clarity with very few places to swim or snorkel. In the Pacific we caught nice big fish regularly and with ease. West of Papua New Guinea the pressure from pollution and over fishing has crushed the marine population. Most fish are rather small and you see fishermen putting in long hours for a meager catch. I'm sure there are some big fish being caught because you see them in the markets, but I've only seen small ones caught locally. I stopped dragging hooks because all I catch is plastic and you constantly need to check the hooks for it.

Anyway you can clean up the oceans all you want, but nothing will change until they get a garage system functioning and educate the people.

There's a beach near where I live we call Garbage Beach that is COVERED in bits on plastic that come from Asia (you can see the writing on packaging). It comes all the way to Hawai'i.

Not surprising. China still burns coal by the shit ton and will continue to for many years. Basically, dump it and let it become someone elses problem.

Just cause they're doing good on one end, doesn't mean they're not wrong for being some rootin', tootin, ocean pollutin' mu-fuckas.

[–]RoastedPony -3 points 8 days ago
Unlike all the western countries having their trash produced there and then blaming them for the trash creating pollution, they are actually trying to fix the problem.

It's easy to criticize a country for its pollution when comparing only brute numbers without looking to the ratio per popula. If we look at Co2 emission and others emission per popula China is actually way better than pretty much all western countries, they only look worse because they are so many packed-up in one area.

[–]K3LL1ON 13 points 8 days ago*
That's like you saying Genghis Khan was so much better than the pillaging Europeans because he fathered so many. I'm not defending any country, but bar none they create the most pollution and they aren't anywhere near green enough to make up for that fact. I'll applaud them when the majority of the country gets it's power through green means and stops killing much of the ecosystem they live in. (Edit: Spelling)

[–]RoastedPony -3 points 8 days ago
That's like you saying Genghass Khan was so much better than the pillaging Europeans because he fathered so many.

Worst analogy I have ever seen.

We are literally producing more pollution individually than any Chinese person individually, and we exceed their pollution drastically.

Here a better analogy. To complain about China's pollution is like complaining poor people are consuming the vast majority of the food.

They create more pollution because you are not comparing per popula. Obviously if you compare a country of 1400 millions to one of less than 350 millions they are going to be doingmore pollution. Also, the US produce half the Co2 of China, but China has around 4x the number of people, think about that.

[–]K3LL1ON 4 points 8 days ago
I just said I'm not defending the US. We make half the emissions that China does, great, that still doesn't make China any less of a terrible nation when it comes to pollution, and environmental hazard. Because of their obsessions with stupid "remedies" hundreds of thousands of animals are poached a year, and some to extinction. They get 7% of their energy from renewable resources while the US gets 12% from renewable resources. Over 75% of China's energy comes from coal while in America it's only about 18% to %20. They may have more renewable energy stations than the US, but apparently it's not helping too much because they still treat the world like a garbage bin. I'm going to try and stress as well, I'm not defending the US or EU. I'm just stating that China definitely isn't green by any standards and they do far more harm than good when it comes to the environment.

[–]RoastedPony 2 points 8 days ago*
And what I'm telling you is that they are already taking more steps than anyone to fix that. Also your data are outdated/wrong.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/07/18/ ... lar-farm/index.html
The US is at 10% of renewable energy and China is at 12% in 2015.

https://yearbook.enerdata.net/to ... ion-statistics.html
From that we can see that in 2016 China is producing 25% of its electricity from renewable source while the US only produce 15%, and China is rapidly changing its production while the US is just stagnating. Its coal consumption has also fallen to 63% and the Chinese government is planning to reduce it even more.

The Chinese government has also taken actions against the poaching.

[–]K3LL1ON 2 points 8 days ago
That still doesn't mean they should be applauded. It's like congratulating an adult because they're peeing in the toilet rather than all over it. You could congratulate a kid, sure, but why is it that you're trying to put China, a country much older than most if not all western countries, on a pedestal when they should have been doing this all along? Many, if not most, regions in China are still swallowed up by smog that kills many folks a year. Their coal fires STILL produce more than half their total energy consumption, and their trash floats all the way to Hawaii to this day. They still whale, poach sharks, rhinos, elephants, dolphins etc... They have no problem destroying the earth, but it's okay because now they've built some hydroelectric dams and wind farms to atone for all of the things they STILL do.

[–]RoastedPony 0 points 7 days ago*
They are not the ones poaching the rhinos and elephants, they are only driving up the demands, demand which the government has forbidden. As for whales, that's the Japanese. Effort has also been made toward shark but eliminating a thousand year old custom can take time.

Also what kind of bullshit is that saying China is old, yeah it is old, doesn't mean it is developed or knew about environmental effect 1000 years ago.

What do you expect them to do, just close all coal power plant and let all their citizen die with no access to electricity?

You are bashing on people that are doing the most to improve themselves because they can't do it instantly.

97% of people in China think their government isn't doing enough to curb pollution and they are still the government in the world doing the most.

Did you miss the part where they reduced their coal consumption by around 14% in 1 year ? They are going to put 1 million Chinese people out of job in the coal sector while the US is saying they want to make more of it.

Also nobody said to applaud them, just stop shitting on them*

The per capita pollution of China is less than half that of the US, they only have more people in one area.

What China produce with coal plants the US easily exceed with beef and cars.

In amount of trash the US also easily beat China.

Most of China is not actually that bad, it's just a bunch of big cities that have smog, which is true everywhere.
