Pakistanhas given us nothing but lies and deceit: US President Donald Trump

United States (US) President Donald Trumpon Monday began his new year by accusing Pakistan of giving Washington"nothing but lies and deceit".

The US president also tweeted thatIslamabad thinks of US leaders "as fools".

He said Washington had "foolishlygiven Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years", butPakistan had in return given "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt inAfghanistan, with little help".

"No more," he added, withoutspecifying what punitive actions — if any — his administration is considering.

The American president's tirade wasresponded to briefly by Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, who said Pakistan would"soon" show the world the "difference between facts andfiction."

Later in the day, the Foreign Officesummoned the American ambassador in Islamabad, David Hale, to record itsprotest against the accusatory statement tweeted by Trump, DawnNews quoteda senior FO official as saying.

US Embassy Spokesman Rick Sinelsineconfirmed the development, saying Ambassador Hale had been called for a meetingat the Foreign Office at 9pm.

Sinelsine, however, said that he wasunaware of the agenda of the meeting.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid KhaqanAbbasi convened a meeting of the National Security Committee to review thenational and regional security situation.

According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting will be attended by theministers of Interior, Defence and Foreign Affairs, the services chiefs, andother civil and military officers.

Moreover, the federal cabinet was alsoexpected to meet in Islamabad on Tuesday with the prime minister in the chairto discuss recent developments.

The US president's tweet came in theaftermath of an increasingly terse back-and-forth between Washington andIslamabad since Trump announced his administration's latest nationalsecurity strategy.

During the announcement, the US presidenthad been quick to remind Pakistan of its 'obligation' to help America"because it receives massive payments" from Washington every year.

"We have made clear to Pakistan that whilewe desire continued partnership, we must see decisive action against terroristgroups operating on their territory. And we make massive payments every year toPakistan. They have to help," the US president had said.

A Pentagon report to the US Congress,released to the media on Dec 17, had said Washington would also take 'unilateralsteps' in areas of divergence with Pakistan while expandingcooperation between the two countries where their interests converge.

Subsequently, US Vice President Mike Pencehad, in a surprise visit to Afghanistan's Bagram airbase on Dec 22, warnedthat Trump has "putPakistan on notice" in what was the harshest US warning toIslamabad since the beginning of the Afghan war over 16 years ago.

Official sources had told Dawn lastweek that the Trump administration was also considering withholding $255 millionfrom a fund meant to provide military training and equipment to Pakistan,adding to already existing cuts on reimbursements.

The Pakistan Army spokesman, Maj Gen AsifGhafoor, hadat a press conference last week asserted that the aid Pakistanreceived from the US was "reimbursement for support we gave to thecoalition for its fight against Al Qaeda."

"Had we not supported the US andAfghanistan, they would never have been able to defeat Al Qaeda," he hadsaid.

"The armed forces are working withfriends and want to continue doing so, but there can be no compromise on ournational honour. We do not want a conflict with our friends, but will ensurethe security of Pakistan," he had added.

His briefing was considered perhaps thestrongest-ever reaction from Islamabad since US functionaries began alluding tothe possibility of unilateral action.

Hitting back at the US, the civilian-controlled Foreign Office (FO) had also warnedagainst the "maliciouscampaign" being "used to trivialise Pakistan's achievementsin the war against terrorism", and noted that "allies do not put each other onnotice."

The FO had further complained that recentUS statements are "at variance with the extensive conversations we[Islamabad] have had with the US administration".

Plain speaking by the President of theworld's most powerful nation. It will be interesting to see if Pakistan has thecourage to refuse American aid and educated Pakistanis can take revenge by notapplying for USA visas and residency.

Jan 01, 2018 05:43pm
Pakistan already done the job. If you wantPakistan to work for you then you have to give Pakistan 10 billion dollars permonth. Because of inflation and duation the cost of doing work chargesincreased

Jan 01, 2018 05:45pm
@Amit Sharma Actually we did stop goingthere, but worry about your cheap IT lame professionals who still die to gothere despite being insulted by the same great person that is making you feelbetter about your insecurities.

Jan 01, 2018 05:57pm
very well said Mr. President.

The truth
Jan 01, 2018 05:58pm
@Amit Sharma its these greedy politicianswho willingly accepted aid from the usa for their own political objectiveswithout realizing there are strings attached. The common people of pakistanhave never benefited a single iota from this aid and have always voiced theiropposition againt the approaches of the americans

@Amit Sharma,

@Amit Sharma
No, we might not be able to do that yetthere are other things that we may be able to pull off.
We are not economically stable, terrorismis taking its toll and two of our neighbours are doing everything in theirpower to undermine us. Revolving door democracy coupled with Military rule thatfailed to invest in the development of physical infrastructure lead us here.Our nation's failure to unite against the adversities, its failure to recognisethe power of its vote, its failure to successfully distribute and not justamass wealth and resources is to be blamed for that.
We may or may not be able to reject theaid. People among us may not stop applying for US visa.
But, let me tell you one thing I am verysure of: Every single one of us will fight till we die for the honour,sovereignty and freedom of our country.

@Amit Sharma,

Jan 01, 2018 06:07pm
@Amit Sharma Pakistan is not supposed toact like you expect. It is not the School Class-V, Class mates doing you andyou. We , Pakistani besides differences, too respect Americans interms of theirachievement in Health Sciences, Science & Technology and al lthey assitedPakistan in various fields.

Jan 01, 2018 06:44pm
All the blame lies on failed US policies inAfghanistan. US has failed in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen along with massivefailure in Afghanistan due to it's own policies.

Jan 01, 2018 06:45pm
@Ash Are you kidding. The way to fight thisis to bring a change in Pakistan and the mindset of its leaders. Wake up.

Jan 01, 2018 06:52pm
Time is changing, we should too. Its timewe stand on our feet, get rid of corrupt elements in our society and theircorruption, and start depending on ourselves. Sometimes, worse things happenfor one's own betterment..

Why tough words on first day of the year.

Jan 01, 2018 07:01pm
Powerful comments from US president.Whether you agree or disagree with the comments, this is the general perceptionin West. This is a wake up call that cannot be ignored Pak politicians.

Jan 01, 2018 07:07pm
@Shahrez Qureshi Very well said. It is nota question of living or dying for the naton's pride but to act in order topreserve it. A lot of pakistan's problems today exist because of the failure ofits rulers to act in the best interests of the nation. If rulers startinvesting in the human resource development then people will start holding thegovt accountable for their decisions and most of present day problems will getresolver automatically.

@Shahrez Qureshi,

Jan 01, 2018 07:08pm
@Amit Sharma I dont think educatedPakistanis are interested to get USA visa anymore. About 60% of H1Bs are givenevery year to Indians despite being offered less than average pay and beingrepetedly refused to enter USA working areas. As far as Mr Trump tweet isconcerned, he must also know what scarifices Pakistan has given in last 15years. We have lost over 30000 innocent lives as well as billions of dollars inpartnership with USA in Afghanistan. Our economy has suffred major blow in last70 years due to this partnership. We want to get rid of mean americans!

Jan 01, 2018 07:12pm
The aid mentioned the president was givento a specific class of people-not the Pakistani nation as a whole.

As usual most of the responses fromPakistani friends is emotional. They are talking about dying for their countryand things like that which sounds really childish.This is the root cause oftheir problem. If you can't think objectively then you can't take correctiveactions.

Jan 01, 2018 07:41pm

The key word is, "No More." Itapplies to Pakistan too, no more favors from Pakistan to any country in theworld. Good that both nations agree on 'No More' from their respective sides.One wonders what the issue is, they should not do anything more for each other.

Jan 01, 2018 07:53pm
Two months ago President Trump in histweets was praising Pakistan for it's efforts and support in combattingterrorism, why the sudden change in tune? Does 50,000+ Pakistani lives lost inthis war on terrorism not matter to anyone?

Jan 01, 2018 07:55pm
@XoF That is a lie. Please check your factssee how many of your citizens applied for a US visa last year. Then check howmany Pakistani’s came back from the US voluntarily. You can live in yourdelusional world as long you like, but the world has moved on!

Jan 01, 2018 08:07pm
I don't think any aid cancellation willaffect the average Pakistani. In any case, this money was not reaching to theaverage person OR it was not used for the actual purpose. Most of this moneywas only going to the corrupt people in position of power - politicians andtheir sycophants.
Overall - it is bad signal for Pakistan, inglobal political terms. US with it's influence on IMF and World bank will mostlikely corner Pakistan as currently the economy of Pakistan is in shambles.

Jan 01, 2018 08:09pm
Whether they like it or not USA cannot manageAfghanistan without support of Pakistan. This is a battle of nerve. Trump wantsto extract more and more from Pakistan

Jan 01, 2018 08:16pm
Mr. Trump President there are more pressingneeds and issues around the world that need attention. Pakistan should be theleast of your worries. Historically Pakistan has been a very compliant ally forthe most part.

Pakistan has to be extremelycareful with its balance of payments. The economic crisis will burden thecountry within the next few weeks and the situation will worsen by March end.Pakistan has to show results as demanded by the US with absolutely no optionsavailable, as this aid is vital at this stage.The timing is very detrimentalfor the country if it does not comply. World bank loans will be difficult tocome by unless Pakistan sacrifices some unimaginable assets. The fact is; 2018will be the worst year for Pakistan and it would be a miracle if they come outof this crisis unscathed.Emotions and sentiments are fine but one has to dwellon real-time issues. Pakistan has ignored itself too much in every sphere sincelast few decades and it played Alice in Wonderland for much too long with theUS and the same happening now with China. It's a country with great potential.What it needs is to reconcile with the modern day reality and earnestly seekfriendship and help from all its neighbors. We all come from the same stock andhence it won't be long before bonhomie develops. Hope and pray things sort outand Pakistan finds solutions which are forever lasting.

Respect is earned. And respect has nothingto do with how big or small you are in size or might, it has everything to dowith how you want to be treated. 'The price tag the world puts on you is justabout the same price tag you put on yourself. Do not play victim. Don't ask forfavors. Don't do what others ask you to do. Don't strike a deal you cannotfulfill. Don't make the sacrifices you cannot afford. Let honest and sensiblepeople to work for you and guide you. Don't think like a slave. Free yourselffrom inside.

Similar tactics have failed in the past,and analysts warn that the US can only influence Pakistan by coupling forcewith diplomacy, which Donald Trump seems to shun.
Any attempt to strong-arm Islamabad couldpush it deeper into a growing alliance with China and Russia, and lead to moreinstability.

After a humiliation faced by the US in UNGeneral Assembly for the draft resolution tabled by Pakistan for the illegalact of shifting its embassy to Jerusalem, a mean and grudging tweet by MrDonald Trump is no surprise to peace-loving quarters of the world. Mr trumpalready enjoying a historic landslide decline in credibility and reason, not tothe only domestic audience but at global theatre of politics.Forgetting thefact Pakistan has many options to choose better friends, but the US may notexist in or exit Afghanistan without Pakistan. Hostilities proliferated byTrump administration are fast isolating the US from its old allies and friendsand taking the world to a disaster course.Pakistan being a credible and potentnuclear power seems in no mood to take false accusations as a pretext to somemisadventure by the US, The price Pakistan can make the US pay, may go soheavey and freaky, its better the US to recoicile the Dirty Tweet.

Jan 02, 2018 04:13am
Trump is right to a certain point. Billionsof dollars has been wasted. Most of the money was diverted into Nawaz Sharifoff shore account same with all the corrupt leaders of Pakistan of the thepast. Very little money is used for the people of Pakistan.

what does trump want from Pakistan? If thiswarning helps Pak work faster towards eliminating its terror infrastructure, itis better for the world. So, the president is doing a good thing, it is Pak'sresponse that will make a difference on whether it eliminates terror willinglyor unwillingly.
