ADDIS ABABA Jan. 1 (Xinhua) — The Chinese-built 756-km electrified rail project connecting landlocked Ethiopia to Djibouti officially started commercial operations on Monday with a ceremony held in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Contracted by two Chinese companies the first 320 km of the rail project from Sebeta to Mieso was carried out by the China Rail Engineering Corporation (CREC) while the remaining 436 km from Mieso to Djibouti port section was built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

工程由中国两家公司承包,连接瑟伯塔到米埃索的前320公里铁路由中国铁路工程总公司施工,而连接米埃索到吉布提的剩下436公里铁路由中国土木工程集团公司施工。

Speaking on the occasion Ahmed Shide Ethiopian Minister of Transport hailed the standard gauge project as a milestone in China-Africa cooperation.

在合作中,埃塞尔比亚交通部长艾哈迈德·什德(Ahmed Shide)称这个标准轨距合作项目是中非合作的一个里程碑。

In addition to further enhancing economic ties as well as the people-to-people lixs between Ethiopia and Djibouti it will have significant contribution to the ongoing development efforts of building a new Ethiopia said the minister.

The minister urged local people especially residents living by the line of the rail to take care of it for its successful and sustainable operation.

Emphasizing on its huge significance and importance Tan Jian Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia noted that the project would contribute to the industrialization and diversification of the Ethiopian economy and also towards the country’s growth and transformation plan.

中国驻埃塞尔比亚大使谈践强调了铁路的重大意义与重要性,并提到这项工程将会对埃塞尔比亚经济的工业化、多样化以及国家的发展与转型计划做出贡献。

“It is the first trans-boundary and longest electrified railway on the African continent. We the Chinese see this as earlier harvest project of the Belt and Road initiative. It is regarded by many as a lifeline project for both countries for Ethiopia and for Djibouti. And we see this as a railway of development; as a railway of cooperation; and as a railway of friendship” he said.

The ambassador has reiterated China’s commitment to further cooperating and closely working with Ethiopia and Djibouti to the railway’s smooth operation.

The Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway project has been carried out with an investment of 4 billion U.S. dollars and China’s Exim Bank has provided a loan.

Speaking on his part Djibouti Ambassador to Ethiopia Mohamed Idriss Farah said the railway project would have significant contribution to the economic integration between Djibouti and Ethiopia.

吉布提驻埃塞俄比亚大使穆罕默德·伊德里斯·法拉赫(Mohamed Idriss Farah)说,这个铁路项目将会对吉布提与埃塞尔比亚的经济一体化做出重大贡献。

“This is important corridor important railways between Djibouti and Ethiopia; we are working for our economic integration between our two countries. And this project was part of the economic integration but not only economic integration but also connecting the peoples of Djibouti and Ethiopia” said the ambassador.

The railway provides both passenger and freight services between Addis Ababa and Djibouti.

What’s missing is recognition …..No amount of rewriting history would scrap the first emperor …..the first one who gave the French a concession to lay a rail lines from Djibouti to Addis Ababa……And it was in 1894. ….He had to prioritize other issues before to reassert and commence the project in 1906. On his foot print now 4 billion is invested to create a modernized…after more than a century.

We Ethiopians were simply watching them doing their own thing ! Shame ! You have to be stupid to give away your own two ports to Eritrea and pay 1billion USD a year to the tiny Djibouti.

Having the railway is great. It creates and develops economic ties for citizens of both countries. But here comes the problem any economic benefits that comes from this will be control by woyane Tegarus. Then you will call the rest “lazy’ they don’t like to work while leaving nothing for them to work with. It’s okay though your time is coming to and end. You will no longer be allowed to rub the poor by not paying taxes on millions and billions collectively.

Wey Ethiopia and its rulers They give away the important God given gifts which is water which we used to have access in the north and east now they are doing this to substitute. lol 5% appreciation here for trying to correct their mistake but this will not satisfy Ethiopians need. I am not sure how many of you know but TPLF already requested / submitted an application asking UN to have access Red Sea through Tigrai. lol Finally when that article they prepared for themselves ( article 39) become closer to be applied for Tigrai they notice that Tigrai needs a port. Askedemo neber yelal yagere sew!! I wish every development work was done through good faith hoping to help Ethiopians but always cover up.

This is the third official opening..but we still don’t have timetable..or even a real date on which it runs trains for the public.

My God! All these idiots know is how to oppose and bring the negative no matter what. They are blinded by hate themselves and preaching the same nonsense they oppose. This is an amazing development that should be celebrated. Cudos to the Ethiopian government for this amazing accomplishment. Keep the momentum going. There are always going to be roadblocks and naysayers to stop your progress. Toss them to the side and keep chugging.

As someone with a fond memory of the old Chemin De Fer that gave me the inspiration to find out how those behemoth pistons of the ‘Worabo’ locomotive that ran on coal fired engines I welcome this news. That old railway which gave me the disciplines of doing business early in my life!!! O!!!O!!! Bostaa ‘Spisian’ Hassan Jog!!!! Wow! Wow!! What an indelible memory. Those of you who did not have the chance to grow near or along the old railway line may not know the fact that hundreds of thousands even possibly millions were able to make a sustainable living because of it. Without it many towns and cities we hear of them so often these days now may not be so. Every town and city including Dire Dawa and Adama might not have been settled with such mass of city slickers. Not a chance. It had catapulted millions from their archaic way of thinking into a modern style of dealing and wheeling. My dream was one day I will take a train ride from Djibouti all the way to Addis(Finfine) and my promise to my granddaughter is to take her along with me on such epic journey. The last time I had done that was in the 1960’s when I took a train ride from Djibouti to a station close to my birth place. I took a Hassan Jog back to Djibouti. That was an epic and unforgettable trip by itself with all those Djiboutian women merchants all around me. Were they replicas Mark Twain!!! The conductor did not have to tell you that the train has stopped at such and such station. You will hear it yourself from the raucous crowd awaiting your arrival to do business with you fast. It was quiet between stations and all of a sudden you get jolted up by a sonic boom!!!! Shay!!! Shay!!! Shahi Bee Laban Shaay!!!! What a memory!!!! But at end all was lost about that legendary railway thanks to the demonic Mengistu. He ran it and ran it to the ground!!!! He was so dumb in everything about doing modern business!!! Some those who used to sing their lungs out for him still call him ‘Menge’? My foot!!!!

What a memory that old time train journey to Dire….. I hade an opportunity to go inside Haile luxory train when I was a kid.
