Why is the Three Kingdoms period in China so important and elaborated on? Why does it get more attention than other periods of civil war?

1; it was early but not that early. If youread the history about the warring state or spring- autumn period, you wouldhave no idea of most of generals and politicians and battles because theexisting records lack of details. But the three kingdoms one provided a very indetail descxtion of most of influential characters and events.

2: In Northern-Southern Dynasties period,betrayal happened frequently. In Sui-Tang dynasties, brothers murdered eachother. In the Three Kingdoms period however, youhave some figures with long life spans who developed from low to high and hadsome basic moral codes, like how Liu Bei trusted Zhuge Liang, how defeatedgenerals were respected, and how Cao, Liu, Sun set up their dynasties after somany experiences they had. This made writing and recreation based on maincharacters possible.

3: the names in the Three Kingdoms wereeasy to be remembered. Due to the name reform earlier, most of characters inthree kingdoms had no more than two characters: one character for family nameanother for last name. There are only few exceptions like Zhuge that had twocharacters for the family name. This made the names easy to be remembered.

But if you look at the Notthern-Southerndynasties period, it had a lot of barbarians involved so the names were likefour characters. In the late Tang Dynasty and five generations and ten kingdomperiods, the Han also had at least three characters in their names(one forfamily name and two for last name). This made it difficult to even remember thenames and thus public lacks of interest to know more about them.

但是你看看南北朝时期，有很多蛮人加入，所以名字有四个字。在晚唐和五代十国时期，汉人的名字里至少有三个字（姓一个字，名两个字）。所以名字不好记，因此公众就没有了想要进一步了解他们的兴趣了。

4: political and cultural reasons alsoplayed a big part here. The Shu faction was considered the good one here by theEastern Jin dynasty, though the Jin dunasty was developed from the Wei Dynasty,later on because its action of Northern campaign represented the obxtive forunification. This attitude was inherited by many dynasties later on.

Eventually this worship led to the national level and thestate level in which the heros were officially recognized by the state as Gods.Guan yu is apparently the most popular one as the Qing Dynasty nominated him asthe Supreme God in Heaven.

The historical length of Three Kindomsperiod is suitable. Every small paragraph has a protagonist, the climax oneafter another. If time is too long, too many characters, people can notremember,like Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period(春秋战国时期). Iftime is too short, too few characters, people feel uninteresting, like Chu–HanContention(楚汉之争). So many wonderful stories have been adapted into dramas, wellknown by ordinary people. This has laid the foundation for the later adaptationof the novel.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms was one ofFour Great Classic Novels in China. The portrayal of the characters in thenovel is particularly successful, and it is easy to remember.
Because ordinary people are familiar withthe stories during Three Kingdoms period, the influence is very profound.

三国时期的历史长度是合适的。每一小段都有一个主角，高潮迭起。如果时间长度太长，人物太多，人们无法记住，比如春秋战国时期。如果历史长度太短，人物太少，人们又觉得没意思，比如楚汉之争。有很多很棒的故事被改编成戏剧，为普通人所熟知。这为后来的小说改编奠定了基础。三国演义是中国的四大经典名著之一。里面的人物描绘尤其成功，而且很容易记忆。

There are four Great Classical Novels inChinese literature:
Journey to the West
Water Margin
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Dream of the Red Chamber
Literally everyone in China knows aboutthose four novels.
Most people do not know the real history ofthe Three Kingdoms, they just know the stories from the Romance. They think ZhuGeliang was some kind of military genius, or that Zhang Fei routed a millionsoldiers with a single roar.
An interesting fact: the Manchus of Qingused a strategy from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms to make the Ming Emperorkill his own best general. What’s more, that strategy came from a completelyfictional story from the novel!
A made-up story determined 300 years ofChinese history!

中国文学里有四本经典小说：
西游记，水浒传，三国演义，红楼梦。基本上每个中国人都知道这四部小说的存在。但是大部分人不知道三国的真实历史，他们只知道三国演义里的故事。他们认为诸葛亮是某个军事天才，或者认为张飞一人可以单挑百万大军。
一个有趣的事实是：满人用三国演义里的一个策略让明朝皇帝杀死了自己最好的将军。此外，这个策略来自于这本小说里面的一个完全虚构的故事！
