Tweaking some lines from a popular rap song from the Hindifilm, Gully Boy, the video titled ‘Tera Time Aayega (Your Time will Come)’ -- warnspeople against ticketless journeys. “Bina ticket ayaa hai tu, pakda zaroorjayega (if you travel without a ticket, you will end up being caught)”, thevideo goes on to say.

Mumbai suburban railways thatcarried 1.3 billion people in 2017-18, is considered one of the bad patcheswhere the menace of travelling without tickets is noticed oftener than othersectors.

Across India, 8.2 billionpassengers (based on the number of tickets sold) travelled on trains in thelast financial year. For the record, Indian Railways has 18,082 trains and7,077 stations for which it deploys 30,535 ticket examiners.

Western Railways spokespersonRavindra Bhaskar says they have increased ‘fortress checking’, a procedurewhere railways deploys senior officials to check ticketless passengers afterclosing down entry and exit points of a particular station.

According to Railway Boarddata, the number of such irregular passengers detected in the first 10 month ofthe current financial year was 14 million. Also, Rs 672 crore was recovered asticket charges and penalties from such passengers during the period.

Hence the bestsolution, they say, lies in modernising all 7,077 railway stations - aseemingly impossible task given railways operating ratio is in the red (moreexpenditure versus earnings), which begs the question: Kya namunkin mumkin hoga(Can impossible be made possible)?

Check the tickets while the peopleenter the railway platform. Do not allow anybody in to the railway stationwithout valid tickets. Modify the entry gates to enable checking.

The same time we should also acknowledge students anddaily wage earners need to get tickets subsidised at cost of those who can pay.And those who can pay should be willing to pay. And those willing to pay needspecial care as they are paying for poor and making their tickets subsidisedsince our Govt cannot pay. Hence good quality AC Rakes must be provided to themand separate place on platform must be dedicated for them. After all we do thesame for Govt’s of Rich Countries. Isn’t it logical?
