Why were the Japanese so merciless to Chinese people during World War II?

Chara Chan, Watched too many documentaries since childhood(从小就看过大量的纪录片)
This question reminds me of my conversation with a Japanese guy, my Yahoo buddy, in 2002, who was studying in the UK.
We first talked about the exhibit of Takuya’s wife, 工藤静香, he typed two Chinese characters on the messenger all of a sudden when I mentioned that I didn’t like her since she is older than Takuya: 毒妇(毒 means malicious). This was so hilarious and unexpected because we were typing in English.
Then he offered his points regarding the massacre.(I don’t think I brought it up since I avoided this kind of topic with Taiwanese and Japanese intentionally. I wanted our conversations to be more casual and general, so that we’d put politics aside and see if we can find anything in common to be friends. That has been my principle since my college years)

P.S.: I’ve read the comments. Here are some of my thoughts:

Every race has its own character which is mainly determined by the geological location and the abudance of natural resources. So, despite the remote connection between Samurai and the modern Japanese soldiers, they inherit the same cultural heritage and tradition: when they are lacking in the natural resources, their survival instinct kickd in, which stimulated their brutality. By analogy, the Koreans are way more ruthless than mainland Chinese if you look at their history in K-town in the 90s, whose inhuman character originates from their harsh living conditions and their history of being crushed and oppressed by us and the Japanese.

So, when I’m talking about samurai and soldier, you can think of them as A and B.
What I meant to say is that: both A and B are influenced by C(geopolitics
But it does not mean that A and B has to be intimately entwined with each other.
OK, if you still can’t get it. Give me a break. Forget about what I worte.

The Japanese got a bad case of Victory Disease in 1942. They defeated not only the US, but Britain, France, and the Netherlands. It went to their heads a bit. You must recall that until the 1853 the Japanese had cut themselves off from contact with the West due to the negative effects of contact with the Portuguese and British. They expelled all gaijin(barbarians) and their priests and ceased trade.
It was not until 1853 when American Commodore Perry landed ashore on Okinawa and Japan in order to set up coaling stations for the US did relations between Japan and the west renew.
Japan came out of its self imposed exile with a vengeance and began to industrialize. In a mere 50-60 years they had industrialized built a navy and soon after defeated Imperial Russia in the major sea Battle of Tushima in 1905 annihilating the Russian Pacific Fleet. This started the Japanese adventurism in Mainland Asia and ultimately led to their incursion into China. Theodore Roosevelt negotiated an end to the war and Japan got Korea, and Russia dropped claims for Manchuria which Japan ultimately occupied.

This is the sort of completely bat shit crazy mindset the Japanese leadership had evolved into. Most leaders knew the war was lost by mid 1944 but continued to prosecute the war for another 12 months during which some of the most horrific bloodletting was to occur. The fire bombing and nuclear bombs were yet to come.
Now the self esteem thing. Japan had something to prove, they started out the poor kid on the block, and became the Asian Master Race in just about 60 years. They kicked the former neighborhood bullies asses, and still did not feel good about themselves. That inherent self esteem issue is still at work today, where Japanese can only be called Americanphiles. They love everything American and the most popular plastic surgery is eyelid surgery: blepharoplasty, to make their eyes more western looking and remove the more mainland Mongolian look.
Take also into account that until their WWII defeat, the Emperor was consider an actual god. The average Japanese person could not even look at him but had to avert their eyes. The Sun God was proven not to be when they lost the war, but during the war the Japanese had a sense of manifest destiny to rule all of Asia. Kind of like the Communist Chinese have today. They saw the rest of Asia as their expanded resource area. I'm reading a book today about the Japanese Navy and they repeatedly refer to what is today, Indonesia and Borneo as the Southern Resource Area, referring to the oil rich area for which they went to war for in the first place after the US refused to sell the any American oil unless they withdrew from China.
So taken as a whole you could say the core reasons were Race and Cultural Differences with some a elitism, self esteem issues thrown in for good measure.
