Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on RussianPresident Vladimir Putin on Thursday to step up efforts to resolve a long-standingterritorial dispute between their countries and sign a postwar peace treaty,calling it their "historical duty."

周四,日本首相安倍晋三呼吁俄罗斯总统普京加紧努力,解决两国间长期存在的领土争端问题,并签署战后和平条约,称其为"历史责任"。

"The new relationship of cooperation between Japanand Russia is becoming more apparent thanks to our work," Abe said in aspeech at a regional economic forum in Vladivostok in the Russian Far East asPutin listened.

The joint declaration stipulates Moscow hands over toTokyo the two smaller islands -- Shikotan and the Habomai islet group -- once apeace treaty is concluded. The other two are Etorofu and Kunashiri islands.

At a bilateral meeting earlier in the day, the leadersagreed to continue "future-oriented" negotiations, according to theJapanese Foreign Ministry.

Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said the leaders agreed topreserve existing cooperation frxworks but there was "no change"regarding the peace treaty issue, Interfax news agency reported.

据国际文传电讯社报道,普京的助手尤里·乌沙科夫说,两国领导人同意保留现有的合作框架,但和平条约问题"没有任何改变"。

The leaders will meet again in November on the fringes ofan Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Chile, Ushakov said.

Moscow has recently hardened its stance on the issue.Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev last month visited the largest of theislands, Etorofu, drawing protests from Tokyo.

Putin said bilateral relations "are stable anddeveloping dynamically," and that he looks forward to discussing futurecooperation with the Japanese leader.
