This country has grown so fast in the past 10 years, and it’s getting better and better. In general the big cities in mainland China are NOT cleaner.. however some areas are cleaner than others.. With that said, they do have much better public transportation than the US, and many cities are becoming more and more international. The malls and buildings are more modern, bigger, brighter, bolder and interesting to explore. The economy is much more stable than back home in the US. With APP’s like WeChat, Taobao, and Meituan this country is extremely convenient. The housing however is an interesting subject. Everyone lives in giant apartment areas that they call “gardens”. You can find nice ones with a Gym and a Pool but it’s going to cost you serious money. The good news is that Rent is relatively cheap in this country. I mean super cheap, (I live in Chongqing and have a pretty upscale pad next to a fancy mall and pay around $350 a month) I prefer living in a house though and it’s much harder to find that in a big city in China. As great as some of this sounds, there are some con’s. For example, this is a country of high population, it can get a littler overwhelming at times when both walking and driving. During heavy times doing things as simple as taking an elevator or riding a bus can prove to be very inconvenient. It’s not that clean. There are cleaner cities and areas but in general it’s a good rule of thumb to bring Hand Sanitizer and Toilet paper with you everywhere you go. In most cities It’s not uncommon to see lots of stray dogs and cats. Because of the high population there can also be some wealth disparity. It’s not uncommon at all to see some nice new buildings next to old dumpy buildings or building that were never completed. This again depends on where you live. It’s an amazing country rich in culture, and has definitely surpassed the US in many ways. You should definitely take a visit! I love it here.

I went to SF, LV a couple of times, as other people already elaborated, China city were typically much newer than its US counter part. That’s the reason the city looks so new and all system functional perfectly. Giving another 100 years those system will eventually begin to age.
Even with some of building in Chinese city is newer than it’s US counterpart, I still think US is city in general is more developed. China have such a large population, this means it need super dense metropolitan areas where as US city does not need.
Taking my hometown Chongqing for example, in urban area, every family lives in a apartment belong to a massive 40~50 story building, this is simply unthinkable in US. Even major cities in US may not have 5 million people. But there are a handful of Chinese cities (More than 15) which can reach this number.

Do you think my hometown fellow wants to live in 40~50 floor apartment buildings? No, they want house. No one wants to live in a super dense area. But there are no choice for China city. Every Chinese 2nd tier city have more than 10 million residence. You do not have enough land to build townhouses, so townhouses in China city is very very costly.
With such a large population, public transportation in inevitable. Can you imaging 10 million people all driving private cars, that’s insane.
On the contrary, I think US is de-urbanize. People were moving out of city because it will be more spacious, you can have you own garden and stuff. It already passed the phase of urbanization.

The question is loaded and an apples to apples comparison is virtually impossible.
If we talk about megacities such as Beijing, Shanghai and NYC, public transportation is far more developed in China. Violent crime is far lower, but non-violent crime is likely the same, if not higher. The population lives under denser conditions in China than in NYC and although residential buildings in Beijing and Shanghai look beautiful, construction quality is poor. Quality of life is much worse. Housing prices are insane.

A big city in the US would have about a million people. This would be a Chinese second tier or even third tier city by population. Public transportation would still be better than the comparable US city. Housing quality is still dismal in Chinese big cities. Driving conditions are better than in megacities only because of less density. But in general roads and sidewalks are far better in the US as are driving conditions.
Where is quality of life better? It depends on what you value. Education? USA. Security? China. Public transportation? China. Less dense and less stressful living? USA. Affordable housing? USA. Political stability? China. Medical care? Maybe China. Car ownership? USA. Economic stability? Maybe China. …

Are you kidding? I haven’t been to US, but I have been to Australia before.
In my opinion, Adelaide is more developed than Chinese big cities in most part.
Adelaide(a city of Australia which I lived about half a year) :
It’s easy to find parks in most part of the city, it’s clean and always ready for visitors. In the main road and most park, you can find water faucet which is designed for drink. There are some playground for children which filled with play equipment, it’s free for everyone. The bike road is excellent, and there are several hiking road which is well maintained. There are always equipment designed for disabled person in public area.

Beijing (I lived for more than 5 years) :
There are several big parks in the city, but it may be far from where you live. It’s very very hard to find water faucet for drink, so it’s wise to buy drinking water from store. You can find several playground for children which is behind high walls — it’s build by rich apartment and only for those who live there. There are a lot of cars in bike road, traffic light seems like advice more than order. It’s hard for find thing designed for disabled person, so it’s rare to see them in public area.
Developed city not only means busy road, high buildings, expensive goods in store, but also means a good place for human beings to live. In this way, I insist that cities in China still have a huge distance compare with cities in Australia, not to mention America.
