Why American public transit is so bad

Most Americans have no choice but to drive. How do we change that?

In the middle of the 20th century, the US government made a decision that would transform American cities: It built a huge system of interstate highways, many of which went right through the downtowns of its biggest cities.

This sealed the country's fate as a car culture, and today we're seeing the results. In most cities, it's extremely difficult to get around without a car, in part due to public transit systems built to serve an outdated commute. And when our politics turn to infrastructure, the government often favors building new roads and highways instead of improving and expanding public transportation.

The result is a system that forces more Americans to drive, at the expense of those who rely on public transit. It's also the biggest contributor to our country’s carbon footprint. Fixing that over the long term will require a reimagining of American cities and towns. But there's also a way that, if we wanted to, we could improve American transit systems, and get more people riding them, in a matter of weeks.

I live in Dallas, Texas. My home is a 10-minute drive from downtown where I work. There are only 3 bus routes within walkable distance from my home. All of which only come by every 45 minutes. Thanks to COVID, DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) cut service frequency and now they all come by every hour. The route I normally take connects me to the light rail system which takes me into the city. A normal trip on my normal route will take 50 minutes to get downtown from my home. Personally, I felt that was ridiculous, so after years of taking DART to work, I purchased an electric scooter and can now go from home to work in ~20 minutes. The only reason I take public transit now is if it's raining.

I think STM did a great job recently in improving visibility for commuters to know when their bus is coming. I use the ''Transit'' app and ever since I started using it I stopped paying attention to what the schedules were telling me.
Also from the area your telling me there's countless ways to get to McGill. The 92 takes you to Namur Station or Jean Talon Station so you can get to McGill by Metro both ways no matter what side you take. You can even make ride shorter by taking the blue line neirby switching to the Orange line at Snowdown or Jean Talon. Soon the REM (new Metro line) will go directly from Jean Talon/Canora to Mcgill in less then 10min. And if you really hate buses Montreal has great public bike rental, electric scooters etc...
Leaving without a car in Montreal is absolutely possible I l leaved there and I got my license just recently because I moved in Ottawa. Never felt the need for a license because public transit was convenient enough for me to go anywhere I needed.

you can’t even compare Seattle now that the bus tunnel is gone. The light rail here is a capital investment like the video says. A huge piggy bank for the local government. It has reduced service compared to what was in the tunnel there before, and the service for all routes even downtown in general never returned after the cuts in the 08 downturn, they just shuffled the burden around. The train is fancy and direct, but it’s projected max use I heard is only 100,000/day people with two lines running, while metro bus service already handles 400,000/day and still growing in 2019, sound transit commuter busses also pick up a big chunk of additional people that will never be served by the light rail. Not saying the train wasn’t needed here. Just the worst planning, as it continues to demolish proper service with its expansion in the north end, terminating bus lines at light rail stations to overload these transfer points and the system while lessening routes to university district, westlake, Eastlake, south lake unx, Seattle center, inter bay, etc, etc. Intentionally poor design that routes everything to the downtown shopping district while effectively ending many neighborhood connections.

Singapore's denser suburbs (like with 10> storey apartments) do have buses too, though they may only go as far as the nearest train station/town centre & you're then expected to transfer to a train go travel further. Wait a few decades after the apartments are built & a train station may be built too. However the less dense suburbs (e.g. semi-detatched housing) may only have public buses skirting their borders e.g. the suburbs along Bt Timah Rd/Dunearn Rd can sprawl up to 2km away from the bus routes

Tre C

- Rich enough to afford a car
- But not rich enough to afford a house or good apartment in the city rather than the distant burbs
- White flight happens and the middle class reluctantly moves out of cities to live in the car highway dystopia as it fails to secure neighbourhoods from integration
- Cities deteriorate into current LA, Detroit, and Chicago
- Middle class is forced to live in culturally and intellectually barren burbs with no influence in the country
- The cities are now trash, but project their trash views onto the country because they still retain cultural hegemony
- Elites can still afford to live in the city, but need to convert to the local trashy culture
The situation is irreversible since it's impossible to have density with cars (try driving a car in Manhattan or central Moscow), so any conversion of cities due to mass white return is blocked. But it's also impossible to reform public transport since it would require lots of middle class tax money - but why would they pay if they don't live there?

Tre C

Why does having enough money for a car mean that one should automatically get one? I could afford a car if I wanted to, but it would make no sense. It's a depreciating asset, with high running costs, and as I don't have a driveway, storing it when not in use (which is most of the time) would be burdensome. On top of that, I've no need for one - my commute to work is easy on a bus that runs every 10 minutes, with the added benefit of being able to go for a drink after work if I want and not have to worry, and it's significantly cheaper to use the train when visiting friends in other parts of the country than owning a car, and I could always rent one if I really need to, but I never have done.
I realise that as I live in a tiny, compacted country - Britain, my perspective on transport will be significantly different from that of someone hailing from an enormous, sprawling country like Australia. I also don't know how Australia spends it's money, but over here maintenance of the road network is a much bigger government expenditure than public transport.

I don't drive, but I have to say my mum's car is infinitely more uncomfortable in winter than the bus. In the morning it's ice-cold for at least the first mile because it takes that long to heat up in freezing temperatures. The windows fog up too AND you have to scrape off the ice before getting in. There is so much uncomfortable prep work until you even get going. The bus at least is already warm when it gets to the stop (the tube even is toasty!), you just need to step in and sit down. I find that infinitely more comfortable. Then again, my mum's car is an older, cheaper model. Maybe the newer, expensive SUVs have all sorts of tricks where it puts on the heating automatically before you step out and defrosts its own windshield, idk. But neither my mum nor I could ever dream of affording such a car. So for us working class folks the bus is still the much better option.

imo it's the complete opposite.

it isn't about how comfortable the journey is I would have much rather be getting to my destination quicker than sitting in a car for 30 minutes because traffic
Also driving isn't the most safe thing. you barely ever hear about train collisions or deaths on trains. But there's probably a car crash every single day
