The world’s most consumed raw material after water and an essential ingredient to people’s everyday lives is slipping through our fingers, scientists warn. Sand may become a scarce resource due to high demand, they say.

“We just think that sand is everywhere. We never thought we would run out of sand, but it is starting in some places,” a climate scientist with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Pascal Peduzzi said during a webinar hosted by the Chatham House think tank.

“It is about anticipating what can happen in the next decade or so because if we don’t look forward, if we don’t anticipate, we will have massive problems about sand supply but also about land planning,” he added.

Peduzzi, who is the director of UNEP’s Global Resource Information Database in Geneva, Switzerland, described the global governance of sand resources as “the elephant in the room.”

“Is it time for panicking? Well, that will certainly not help, but it is time to take a look and change our perception about sand,” he said as quoted by CNBC.

According to Peduzzi, sand use could only be measured indirectly via a “very, very good” correlation between the use of sand and cement.

The UN estimates that 4.1 billion tons of cement is produced every year, driven primarily by China, which accounts for almost 60 percent of today’s sand-fueled construction boom.

Statistics show that it takes ten tons of sand to produce every ton of cement. This means that, for construction alone, the world consumes roughly 40 to 50 billion tons of sand on an annual basis. The amount is enough to build a wall 27 meters high by 27 meters wide that wraps around the planet every year.

The global rate of sand use has tripled over the last two decades, partially due to surging urbanization and industrialization. It far exceeds the natural rate at which sand is being replenished by the weathering of rocks by wind and water.

UNEP has previously warned of thriving “sand mafias,” saying that groups consisting of builders, dealers and businessmen are known to be operating in countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Kenya and Sierra Leone.

"Statistics show that it takes ten tons of sand to produce every ton of cement." Whoa!
I think that's some kind of logical contradiction. Sand is only one component of cement, the other is gravel and cement and water of course. You couldn't get one ton of cement by inputting 10 tons of sand! The ingredient known as cement is made from limestone, not from sand. It's limestone that is heated until the limestone becomes a paste like consistency. The word cement has two connotations.

Cement is the binding agent mixed with sand and other aggregate to make construction concretes and mortars. A ten to one ratio is a very weak mix, a ratio of five to one or less is typical.

No cement contains ZERO sand. What the ignorant "climate scientist" is probably meaning is concrete, which is about 30%-35% sand. That's why you should talk to a civil engineer if you want to know about concrete and sand usage, not a climate scientist. Their main function is to scare people by making ridiculous alarmist claims, as we see here.

IMO much of the ignorant claims here come from some RT "business" columnist who is attempting to paraphrase something heard on line and getting it badly wrong. As usual they try to rewrite something in their own words without the slightest understanding of the subject matter.

"Statistics show that it takes ten tons of sand to produce every ton of cement. "
Well then your stats are totally screwed. Firstly there is ZERO sand ( silicon dioxide ) in a ton of cement, which is made from limestone ( calcium carbonate ). What your climate scientist is probably referring to is concrete which he ignorantly calls "cement". A ton of concrete is about 35% cement, the rest is sand and hard-core ( small pebbles ). So it takes about 0.3 tons of sand to make a ton of concrete. So the claims in the article are off by over two orders of magnitude. ( admittedly, not bad for a climatologist ).

For all those Einstein's joking about deserts and so on, this is actually a very serious problem. NOTHING on our planet is endless and infinite and free. It's quite hard to build a factory in the middle of the Sahara and it makes no sense to either transport the fragile glass if the factory is near the sand or to transport the sand if it is not near the markets where the glass is needed. Yes, let's use our limited reserve of fossil fuels for moving sand from the Sahara to Europe or wherever the most vaccine vials are needed.
Semiconductor production uses HUGE amounts of (clean) water and (clean) air and energy so there's nothing very green about going "digital" and living our lives online. That's before even getting into servers' energy consumption.
This shortage is going to impact the price of anything that comes in glass, including vaccine vials. So chuckle if you have not through this through but maybe also store a few jam jars just in case.

@Tango
Actually sand is renewable and endless as long as we do not use it up faster than big rocks are made into little rocks and little rocks are made into sand. Megatons of sand have been dredged out of the oceans and rivers to reclaim/build land

So the sand loses its weight when mixed to become concrete? More likely, one ton of sand will yield ten tons of concrete as more or less a third of the mix is sand, the rest is crusher stone, with the cement contributing very little towards the overall weight and volume of the mix. 10 tons of sand, mixed with cement and water, will yield slightly more than ten tons of whatever you want to call it.

Sand and gravel are now the most-extracted materials in the world, exceeding fossil fuels and biomass (measured by weight). Sand is a key ingredient for concrete, roads, glass and electronics.
Massive amounts of sand are mined for land reclamation projects, "shale gas extraction" and beach reclamation programs.
