Here is a list of some of the things that will trigger most, if not all Malaysians:
“Do you live on trees?”
No. In fact, none of us live on trees, not even aboriginal peoples. Majority of the Malaysian populace lives in urban areas, here are a few photos of some of the major cities in Malaysia for your reference:
1. Kuala Lumpur, the ultra-modern capital of Malaysia
2. George Town, Penang Island, a UNESCO World Heritage City that was founded by the British in 1786
3. Kuching, Sarawak, the city of cats on Borneo Island
So, do people still think that we live on trees?

Well, yes. It’s the second official (to some extent) language of the country and is widely used in business, education, diplomacy etc. Heck its even used to explain the meaning of words that are too unwieldy in the national language, which is Malay, the native tongue of the majority here. Plus, it has historical connections to the country being an ex-British colony for over 200 years.
Not only that, we are natural linguists that can speak at least 2–3 languages. Even governmental notices often come in multiple languages.

FYI, Malaysia is the only country outside of the Sinosphere to have preserved the language, culture, traditions completely. Our ancestors even fought for Chinese medium schools so that we could retain our culture and language through education. Something the mainlanders would often credit neighbouring Singapore for despite them erasing Chinese medium schools from their education system.

“Singapore has the best food!”
You’ll be forgiven if you’ve only been to Singapore but this definitely pisses off many Malaysians. As a Penangite (someone from Penang), I must say there’s actually some truth to it when compared to food from KL and Johor Bahru, but still Penang definitely has the best food, hands down. Being the Food Capital of Southeast Asia, Penang has a long tradition of serving a plethora of dishes rich in flavour and spices with influences from Chinese, Malay, Indian, Thai etc., where east meets west being an entrepot on historical shipping routes, not forgetting to mention the various styles of Chinese cooking from different regions of China that exists here on this island brought by our ancestors.
To my non-Malaysian friends, do come try our Penang food first before making this comment. I’m sure you’ll change your mind and say “Penang has the best food ever!”
Oh and Singaporean Char Koay Teow should just be called Char Mee instead. Sorry my Singaporean friends but yours doesn’t even have a single Koay Teow (flat rice noodle) in it!
“Is Malaysia a poor country?”
Not really. In fact it might surprise you that we are almost achieving High Income Nation status. I admit that we still have people living in poverty, but that’s a small portion of the general populace and we have frequent handouts in place to assist those living in poverty.
“People from Malaysia are Malay, right?”
Apparently not always. We are from a diverse bunch like Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians, indigenous peoples and so on. So please stop assuming we’re all Malay, okay? The correct term would be Malaysian.
· "新加坡美食最好！"
—— 如果你只去过新加坡，那还可以原谅，但这肯定会让很多马来西亚人生气，作为一个槟榔屿人（来自槟城的人），我必须说，与吉隆坡和新山（马来西亚城市）的美食相比，这句话有一定的道理，但槟城的食物绝对是最好的，毫无疑问。
作为东南亚的美食之都，槟城有着悠久的传统，有大量的菜肴，味道丰富，并受到中国、马来、印度、泰国等国的影响，东西方文化在这里交汇，是历史上航运路线上的一个转口港，更不用说我们的祖先在这个岛屿上带来的来自中国不同地区的各种风格的中国美食烹饪。
对于我的非马来西亚朋友来说，在发表这个评论之前，请先来尝尝我们的槟城美食，我相信你会改变主意，会说 "槟城的美食是最好的！"哦，对了，新加坡的Char Koay Teow（炒粿条）应该叫 Char Mee，很抱歉，我的新加坡朋友们，你们的食物中根本没有Koay Teow（扁平米粉）！

This was years ago and I think fewer people make this mistake now with recent events that have placed Singapore on the world map. Things like the Trump-Kim summit, Crazy Rich Asians etc have inevitably helped in one way or another.

我：不... 新加坡不是中国的一部分。

这是几年前的事了，我认为现在犯这种错误的人少了，因为最近发生的一些事让新加坡在世界地图上占据了一席之地，比如特朗普和金正恩的峰会，电影《疯狂的亚洲富豪》等等，都不可避免地以某种方式带来了帮助。

Pakistan Army is root of all problems.
Like most other nations, Pakistanis also think very highly of their Army.
Partition was wrong.
Partition, which resulted in the independence for Pakistan, is appreciated and seen as necessity and birth of the nation.
I do not support Kashmiris.
Pakistanis enjoy close ethnic, linguistic, religious and historical ties with Kashmirs and support the Kashmir cause very passionately.

This sentence can anger so many people in my country. After all, the second red scare was just 70 years ago, the Cold War ended either 1989 or 1991, and Americans are taught to more or less hate communism since they’re old enough to figure out what communism is.

American is not a language. It’s called American English.
“America is not a beacon of hope and everything good in the world.”
Then, I’d use some evidence to back this up. Some Americans would be triggered. Mainly the older ones. The younger ones more or less have already accepted that as reality.

I don’t have any evidence to back this up. But I’m saying it anyways because I saw a presidential debate once and it looked like an absolute mess of a shouting match and then I quit watching.

Bali is Indonesia - If you happen to be a foreigner and be in Bali then you say this to local, they might ignore you but if you say this to other Indonesians then you’ll be frowned upon or you are likely to make them say “ What the hell are you talking about ?! ”. Bali is one of provinces in Indonesia which is famous as world class tourist destination but Bali does not represent the image of Indonesia as a whole. Indonesia is a country with 34 provinces and Bali is one of them.
Indonesians still live in jungle - I suggest you to use google streets to see the cities in Indonesia. That’s cheap and you don’t need to pay for flight tickets to go to Indonesia.
Indonesians are Malay - We know we are part of Malay race but saying to Indonesians that they are Malay is not acceptable or even regarded as offensive to most Indonesians. If you happen to meet right wing Indonesians and you say this to them, you will enrage them and they won’t be nice to you when you interact with them . Indonesians will proudly call themselves as Indonesians and when we talk about Malay race, that means our neighbor country, Malaysia.
Dutch granted Independence to Indonesia - Never say to Indonesians that Indonesia got its Independence granted by Dutch. Dutch people might say that but we reject that notion. Indonesians get their Independence and freedom from colonial regimes through bloody battles and we didn’t kneel down and beg the colonial regimes to grant us Independence.
This was how Indonesians got their independence.
Indonesia is poor country - Indonesians have their own standard of living and they are pretty happy with it. Indonesia is a developing country with the biggest GDP in South East Asia and one of members of G20 countries . Again please use google streets to see cities in Indonesia and make your own judgment. I am tired showing stats to prove the actual economy of Indonesia.
Indonesia is a migrant labor nation - This statement usually come from people from Middle East and some Asian Countries but they will be surprised when they come to Indonesia and see by themselves the true face of Indonesia. In fact the population of Indonesia is more than 250 million people and according to official release from government agency saying that, in total there are 1 million Indonesians are working in any foreign country. See the comparison ? it means 249 million of Indonesians stay and work in their home country.
Indonesia annexed East Timor - No, Indonesian did not annex East Timor. We liberated them from Portugal regime. But somehow people in East Timor decided to separate from us in 1999 because of being influenced by false propaganda made by a foreign nation which is only two hours flight from Bali.
All Indonesian women wear Burka like in KSA - Many Muslim women in Indonesia don’t wear Hijab and very few of them wearing Burka when leaving their homes. Why don’t you spend a minute or two to google to find out more about Indonesian women.
