I couldn't help but quote Tyrion Lannister from the book 'Game of thrones' written by George R R Martin. This conversation follows when Tyrion was asked why he reads so much :
“Why do you read so much?”Tyrion looked up at the sound of the voice. Jon Snow was standing a few feet away, regarding him curiously. He closed the book on a finger and said,“Look at me and tell me what you see.” The boy looked at him suspiciously. “Is this some kind of trick? I see you. Tyrion Lannister.”Tyrion sighed. “You are remarkably polite for a bastard, Snow. What you see is a dwarf. You are what, twelve?” “Fourteen,” the boy said. “Fourteen, and you’re taller than I will ever be. My legs are short and twisted, and I walk with difficulty. I require a special saddle to keep from falling off my horse. A saddle of my own design, you may be interested to know. It was either that or ride a pony. My arms are strong enough, but again, too short. I will never make a swordsman. Had I been born a peasant, they might have left me out to die, or sold me to some slaver’s grotesquerie. Alas, I was born a Lannister of Casterly Rock, and the grotesqueries are all the poorer. Things are expected of me. My father was the Hand of the King for twenty years. My brother later killed that very same king, as it turns out, but life is full of these little ironies. My sister married the new king and my repulsive nephew will be king after him. I must do my part for the honor of my House, wouldn’t you agree? Yet how? Well, my legs may be too small for my body, but my head is too large, although I prefer to think it is just large enough for my mind. I have a realistic grasp of my own strengths and weaknesses. My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind … and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.” Tyrion tapped the leather cover of the book. “That’s why I read so much, Jon Snow.”

Imagine a room within four brick walls.
It's comfortable and you have what you need.
But it has no windows.
This room is an ordinary life. Acceptable, but limited.
Reading is like creating a window.
A window means a breeze. It means light, and the sun shining in, and a view.
The view can be anything, anything you want. A beach, the sky, a story, history; soldiers ready to raise the alarm, a boy in a cabin, a beautiful woman with a long yellow dress, a tiger, desperate and hungry, trapped on a life raft.
You can look out at whatever you wish; and you can learn. Pick what you want to learn about: the entirety of world knowledge is at your fingertips.
The more you read the more you open windows in the brick walls until you are left with no bricks. Just a vast expanse full of everything you have chosen.
Now remove your favorite story.
Pack up the soldiers and say goodbye to the woman and watch the tiger and the life raft drift away.
Shut out the light.
Close off the breeze.
Replace every brick.
Return to your life, acceptable, circumscribed and finite.
This is a life without reading.
Now, you ask, am I saying reading is better than real life?
Is it better to live, or is it better to read?
And I ask you: why should you be without either?
My answer is - both. Pick both. Open all the windows.

Yes, I read a lot.
My mother made me a member of a library when I was just 12. Since then, I have been an avid reader.
Reading makes you an amazing person from a normal person. It brings the joy and thrill of transporting you to a world which has completely different set of events oblivious of the present world. Reading is a process which requires your full attention and if done properly, triggers a series of electrochemical reactions on encountering disparate events in the book. It makes you a better person. You may not have experienced a lot of things in your life first handedly but it gives you the advantage of experiencing them-in different modes.
Based on what you read, reading will always make you a better person. It will improve your vocabulary, embellish your narration and strengthen your skills of analyzing people and situations.
Reading is an integral part of my life and it's difficult imagining life without it.
Read a lot, read whenever you can and wherever you can.
I am an Indian and 21 in age but because of reading, I know so much about different people, places, feelings, customs, traditions and human behavior. I would have been a lot less knowledgeable if it weren't for reading.
It's never too late to start reading. Grab a book today!

Deep focusing on a book is one of the best investments of your time.
The brain develops stronger analytical skills and gets into critical thinking mode, forming new connections and even creates new ideas whenever you're reading.
A random sampling of the world’s most successful people will show one common trait: a love of reading. Because reading is the easiest way to continue the learning process.
Successful people stick to their reading habits due to the immense benefits they derive in the process, which are often beneficial to them all through their lives, so why shouldn't you?
“Whatever problem you’re struggling with is probably addressed in some book somewhere written by someone a lot smarter than you."

This is the real life story of the transformation of a man who was on the verge of suicide to become one of the greatest leaders of India.
In 1962, large scale army recruitment was undertaken in India and an 18 years old young man was sexted for the job. A vehicle in which he was travelling was hit by a bomb, but he survived. He contemplated suicide owing to the tough life and the constant state of deprivation of his family and village. He even wrote a suicide note, but decided against this, as his sister’s wedding had to be fixed.
At a book stand in New Delhi railway station, he came across Swami Vivekananda's booklet "Call to the youth for nation building" which inspired him to think deeper. He spent his spare time reading the works of Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi, and Vinoba Bhave. He realized that saints sacrificed their own happiness for that of others, and that he needed to work towards ameliorating the suffering of the poor.
This book of Swami Vivekananda transformed his life.
He later led the greatest anti-corruption fight in India and he is considered to be one of the most respected social activists of India.
His name is Anna Hazare

Books contain the thoughts of the greatest minds of the world. Every human being has to die but his thoughts are eternal which can be transmitted from one generation to another till eternity.
If you don’t read, you have little chance to succeed in this world.
Books give us ideas to shape our life.
All great men had formed their ideas from the thoughts of other great men by reading books.
Books plant the seed of thoughts in your mind.
Bishop Beckwaith explained the power of thoughts in the following words
Plant a thought and reap a word;
plant a word and reap an action;
plant an action and reap a habit;
plant a habit and reap a character;
plant a character and reap a destiny.
Develop the habit of reading to excel in life to transform your life.

种下一个思想,收获一句话;
种下一句话,收获一个行动;
种下一个行动,收获一个习惯;

Reading has become one of the most joyful things in my life. I'll try to go into detail why this is so.
My mom introduced me to the world of books at a very early age. Comics like Tinkle were my first picks. As I gradually grew up,I kept diversifying my reading interests to a wide extent. The benefits of this were many: fluency in English, improved general knowledge, improved speech etc. This is true for all readers. We generally tend to remember interesting trivia we pick up while reading. Much better than memorizing stuff from GK books, wouldn't you say?
One other reason why I love books is the sheer freedom it provides. You can forget all the troubles you've faced at work, school or college while immersed in a good book. You can be truly free for a time. Fantasy fiction is my favorite genre so I can relate to this a lot. Fantasizing about all you would like to be can sap up all the stress we face generally and give you a sense of contentment. I feel this quote summarizes it perfectly.

This answer is going to be a little personal and probably a little too long. Stop here if you're not in the mood for a long read. When I was much younger, my family was under financial crisis owing to a business loss and we couldn't afford those monthly and fortnightly children's magazines. My cousin used to subscribe to a couple of them and I used to read them after our playtime as we lived nearby. She sometimes used to snatch it away from me saying she wanted to read it, but never actually did. It's the age I suppose and I don't hold any resentment about it now though it sure did hurt a lot then. I'm actually thankful for that reaction now.

You see, I started reading more after that and it shook my life, brick by brick. I started saving all my pocket money and started hitting second hand book shops and old paper marts where people used to throw away books and newspaper for money, weight equivalent. I made friends with those shopkeepers and bought magazines and books with all the money I had saved. I read books at random without knowing who the best-sellers were or which the popular series was at the time. I borrowed those expensive books from good friends in school and waited patiently till it was my turn to get the book. (There used to be a queue!) I ran away to the library at every chance I got and read any piece of paper I could lay my hands on along with assorted books from my father's library that survived some really greedy silverfish... and I believe it's the best thing I've done in my whole life.

When life was hard on me from multiple angles of finance, puberty and personal relationships, I just disappeared into a book. I knew that I could escape into a book if there was an external conflict and later come across a wholly new perception that it might give me.
Years of being so wonderfully cooped in new worlds leave you with so much. For starters, I began to appreciate the time spent with myself. I can go for days without any human contact to validate my existence. I learnt to be independent and learn the means to get something I really want. I developed a sense of identity by picking and choosing from the ones I've read, (sub)consciously developing a conglomeration of characteristics, thoughts and ideas. I learnt to see multiple angles to any given situation, an open mind that allows thoughts to battle within thereby facilitating a creative vent. I believe in the existence of parallel universes, magic and time travel. I learnt to love people for their thoughts and not their faces and that everyone is a shade of grey. I developed an indescribable bond with my favourite authors and characters, people who never shunned me when everyone else was breathing down my neck.

These stories make me and break me. I'm left with choices for a mosaic of my own mess and there is nothing better than piecing together a new composition of myself only to be faced with the same process every single time I read a good book. I am thus constantly evolving and changing. I am not scared to discard notions I've held on to for a long time to embrace something new. It's not necessarily flaky but rather a process that builds me and gives me the courage to seek what I want and be honest about what I don't know.
Reading is important because it allows me to rebuild myself without guilt or remorse and accept myself for just who I am and currently.

Reading is important but it all depends what are you reading.
If all you are doing is reading:
Answers on Quora - you will only get a perspective.
Books of fiction - you will be entertained
Non-Fiction books - you will gain knowledge how to improve
Academic books - you will gain knowledge about that subject
So all reading does is akin to having a website with zero content on it. When you read - you post that content online. So now you have to decide what to do with that content. And that is where the actual difference takes place.
Simply reading anything and everything is pointless. As pointless as simply typing on a word document without knowing what you are typing, why you are typing it and for what purpose.

Quora
