He triumphantly raises his arms and congratulates himself, then claps, then lets out a cry of joy, then throws his fists in the air. Crowd obviously doesn't care about his ecstasy but Chris is least bothered. He is enjoying the beginning of “a little part of his life” which he calls happiness.

The Japanese made a statue at the station and consider him a symbol of loyalty and perseverance. Lasse Hallstrom made a film set in the US, starring Richard Gere and Joan Allen, and it slipped through the radar when it came out. When I finally saw it, it just broke my heart, and I probably cried as much in that movie as Schindler's List or The Champ (two other weepies that come to mind). The film's story follows the life of a lonely and depressed man by the name of Lee Chandler (played by Casey Affleck), who deals with the loss of his older brother and taking legal custody of his teenage nephew, Patrick Chandler.
