Whether or not your teacher is lying (that is, deliberately telling you what they know to not be true), your teacher is full of BS. The US is, by far, the biggest invader of other countries in the world.

None of those invasions by the US were for the purpose of protecting the world, or even for protecting the US. The US’ invasions of those countries created far more, and far bigger problems and dangers for both the US and the world. They were criminal wars of aggression, waged only to further US power and control, and to steal the resources of other countries so the US could enrich itself at the expense of innocent people’s lives.

Both are correct. In the history of the US, there have been small wars that were fought in the best interests of the US, such as Mexican-American War, War of 1812, and some smaller interventions, etc. In recent history WWII on , you’re teacher is mostly right, though I wouldn’t say it’s been just to “protect the world”, but if you look back, Iraq was because Iraq decided to not abide by UN Resolution 687 (inspections of chemical weapons stockpiles to ensure they were destroyed, inspecting suspected nuclear research facilities), one of the results following Iraq’s defeat in the Gulf War. Afghanistan, well, that was pretty obvious, Afghanistan’s aiding, abetting, and protecting Al Qaeda which committed an attack on the US on 9/11. Kosovo and Bosnia against Serbia which was committing documented atrocities against civilians. The Gulf War resulted in the US joining with thirty something other nations in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Syria - went in to fight against ISIS since the Russians were only concerned with supporting their Syrian dictator puppet and weren’t doing anything. Vietnam - response to the invasion of South Vietnam by North Vietnam. Korea - response to North Korea’s invasion of South Korea. WWII was WWII, Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack on the US, and a few days later, Germany and Italy declaring was on the US.
So, it depends on how you are looking at it - the entire history of the US, or the contemporary history of the US.

Neither is lying but your dad is correct. Your teacher believes propaganda they were told. The US does not always act honorably. Sometimes wars are fought for good reasons, sometimes not. A good example is the two Gulf Wars. The first was a UN sanctioned war to push Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait after he invaded them, the second was George Bush Juniors desire to be a big man and outdo his dad and was a corporate war for profit. Perfect examples of a legitimate war and an illegitimate one.

The U.S. did send troops into Iraq when Saddam Hussein made a power grab for neighboring Kuwait and upon the belief he was aiding terrorist organizations and upon the questionable intel that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Then you have the question of “what exactly is a WMD?” Certainly nuclear weapons are, but none were found in Iraq. Are biological toxic materials WMDs? I think Covid has shown just how lethal they can be. Some insist Saddam had biological chemical laboratories at the time, which were a potential threat to the world if used/released. This occurred during President George W. Bush’s administration.

The USA (also during President Bush’s tenure) invaded Afghanistan after the horrific 9/11/01 attacks by Al Qaeda terrorists, led by Osama bin Laden (“OBL”). It’s interesting to note OBL and, I believe, several of his followers (who hijacked the four planes intentionally flown into the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon) were actually born Saudis, as was OBL, who had been banned from that country for his radical beliefs. Hiding in remote, mountainous Afghanistan for years, the US sent troops in to capture OBL and his “chief commanders” The US was largely effective in hunting down OBL’s commanders.

I’m sorry my answer is so lengthy, but it’s a complex issue involving many variables, and at least three Presidential administrations. However, I do not believe your teacher or your dad are lying to you. They just have opposing opinions on the issue, as do many Americans. And it’s ok to have differing opinions.
