(Yes HK has her own football leagues) And I’m currently working as a side job for a semi pro HK football club in the third tier. Some HK players would eventually play in the Chinese leagues because despite the problems within Chinese football, the footballing level is still more sophisticated than HK.

Although the Chinese government intends to develop football, it has been deliberately avoiding the core of European football - community and association. China is not a country of immigrants, but poor farmers can be considered immigrants to this country. What makes China's ambitions even worse was not only did they fail to qualify in the 2022 cycle, they were unceremoniously eliminated in a 3-1 loss to Vietnam. Vietnam's record in the AFC WCQ doesn't do justice how they did. Vietnam pushed a lot of teams, like Japan to the brink. I find it so curious that for all the time and money being committed to this project, a lot of those players in the mid 2010s who moved to China either went back to Europe or South America almost soon after and the Chinese Super League never picked up the traction China hoped for.

For USA, it is the pseudo-franchise system of MLS that undermined American football development and caused its players to go exile for better European leagues. And also, do not forget the final moment that caused China's football to such a humiliating fate: the 1-3 loss to Vietnam in 2022 WCQ - the first time ever a Southeast Asian nation claimed a win in a WCQ final round - and this happened on the Lunar New Year.

And African countries once the whipping boys of football in the 1970s are represented in the top 20. From a Chinese, why we don't produce many talents despite having the largest population is far beyond a question of football. The root of the problem lies within how our society is structured and the values of parents. Namely, for example in the UK, if you fail to make it as a professional football player, you can always play in the lower leagues or take a blue-collar job. That is nonexistent in China. For the vast majority of parents, academic grades are what matter most, because that's how you get to a top university and have a brighter future. Labour workers are looked down upon, their work is tiring, and they don't earn much. To have your kid train professionally is too big a risk, because after all, few can stand on the highest stage. So our youth academies are very very weak.

China thinks it can solve every problem from the top. Executive orders, plans etc. But more often than not, those bureaucrats don't really understand how things actually work, just like their failure with the one-child-policy or the meltdown in China's real estate sector or the belt and road initiative. Chinese government officials and leaders believe that they can shape reality as they see fit, only for reality to punch back much harder. Football is not exception to that rule. Do you know any European or South American who plays in Korean Premier League? Or in Japan's J-League? Only Iniesta did, instead of retiring some years earlier. Yet South Korea and Japan are Asian superpowers in football, they win their continental cup frequently, their clubs fare well in Asian Champions League and they are permanent participants in the World Cup. And unlike China, S. Korea and Japan have players in the top 5 leagues in Europe.
