I showed up to the interview dressed to the nines, post double shot latte, and mentally prepped only to be ushered to a hallway lined with chairs and a dozen other potential applicants already waiting their turn. I knew I needed something to make me stand out if I had any chance of securing the job.
When I was finally called up I walked into a nightmare. There were 6 tables in a U shape around a single chair in the middle of the room with 3-4 interviewers sitting at each of the tables. Someone pointed at the chair in the center and said, “Take a seat and tell us about yourself.”
As I took the seat I said, “Is this an interrogation, intervention or an interview?”
The room erupted in laughter.
Later, my boss (who was in the room) said that comment won me the job. According to her, it proved to the group that I could “speak publicly under pressure and still maintain an appropriate sense of humor.”

Two things come to mind immediately.
One
Interviewer: “Why do you want to teach at a Catholic school?”
Me: “My high school counselor told me that this is where the big money is in teaching. I believe they may have been misinformed.”
(It’s funny because everyone here knows that Catholic school teachers make much less than their public school counterparts.)

It was a 95-degree summer day, and I was interviewing for a teaching position at a high school. I was being interviewed by a group of five people. I walked into the room with my sport coat in my hand and, before anyone said anything, I held it out and said, “It’s too hot to wear this thing. I just brought it in to prove I own one.”

They all laughed, and the tension was broken.

“I’m not going to lie, yes I have stolen before.”
I was interviewing for a seasonal position at Home Depot with the store manager. The interview was going well, but he seemed to be quite serious so when the opportunity to hopefully lighten the mood presented itself, I took it.
“Have you ever stolen anything?”
“I’m not going to lie, yes I have stolen before.”
The look on his face turned to utter disgust and disappointment. I thought for a second I had blown it.
“May I ask why?”
“Honestly, I can’t remember. I actually can't even recall stealing, but I know I did because I remember very vividly the moment my Mom made me go back into the store, hand the pack of balloons to the manager and apologize to him for stealing them. I was only 3 years old but I definitely learned my lesson, I haven't stolen anything since.”
He roared with laughter and said that was the best, and most honest thing he had ever heard in a job interview.
I walked out of there with the job.

You know that bullshit question, ‘What’s your biggest weakness’?
You’re always supposed to answer with something like, “I work too hard” or, “I’m a perfectionist”.
I was on a bit of a long job-hunt, and had been to a few dozen interviews. I was getting tired, I was getting stressed.
The interviewer rolled this out, and I figured, fuck it - let’s give it a whirl.
I said, “I can’t watch my fucking mouth”.
I got the job.

I was once on an interview and asked a very common question:
“How do you handle confidential information?”
I answered, “I’m sorry. I can’t answer that.”
They laughed and I was hired. They told me that it was that comment was what got me the job. I worked there for five years.

Panel of six people from the hiring committee were sitting across from me.
Towards the end of the interview, one of them asked me, “Why do you want to work for this company?”.
“Why not?!”
The panel was dazed by my answer.
Another person from the panel proceeds to ask me “I don't think you understand. We want to know why you want to work for this company so that we can gauge whether or not you're a good fit for us.”.
“Yeah, and again, why not?!”
Still dazed, the assistant head of the hiring committee says “Ok, that is all. Thank you. We will contact you if we decide to bring you….”
“You’re hired. You start next Monday.”
A year and a half after and two promotions later, I walked into my mentor’s office and asked, “Why me?”
With a grin on her face she says…
“Why not?”

Two years ago I was in a visa interview at the embassy. He was a young man who had already rejected 4 members before me and I was not sure I would succeed. He started asking me several questions, apparently in which he was not convinced, and then his last question was:
“Is that your Dad’s tie?”
My reply: “Yes, it’s a sentiment — it always brought my dad good luck and I believe it would do the same for me.”
That’s it. He smiled and his next words were the golden words:
“Have a nice stay.”
I told him that answer because I had observed him all the time when he was interviewing, he had worn an old watch and when he was typing something on his computer or when his phone got a notification or something and the screen lit up, I had seen an older man’s photo, clearly resembling him with the beard and the nose, which made me realize that this guy had lost his dad or he had a big love for dads.
