I read the books as the first step in research for the role! I lived in China for a few years, but now I’m back in the US. My Dad got cancer, so I left my career there to come back and be with him. He passed away, but moving back to China mid-pandemic wasn’t a great strategy either. I’m in LA for now!

Captain Shi looks like he stepped right out of the book.Casting is very good overall, and the series has a visual style that closely matches what I felt reading the books. It's ALWAYS better to hear the actors emote in their own language -- so it's fortunate that the subtitles are so good here.

I don't know if I will watch the Netflix version, but it's great to have a natively produced version where the intricacies of the concepts are better understood by the writers. I'm enjoying this series very much!

I've only seen 1/2 the first episode. it is faithful thus far to the novel, which is a GREAT novel. However, this adaptation suffers from many modern trends - lousy SFX, flashy but unnecessary camera motion, loud bangs on the soundtrack, rapid edits that aren't necessary. I feel like I'm watching a CSI: Las Vegas episode. I understand that modern audiences like flashiness, and the Netflix series will probably be more of the same. This Chinese version so far seems to be a by-the-numbers rendition. It's acceptable, but could have been brilliant. We're getting Phantom Menace here, not 2001: Space Odyssey. Watchable, but a missed opportunity...so far. I'll keep watching to see if it improves.

Agree with everything you said, so far the scxt seems to follow the original pretty closely aside from some few changes that don't detract from the overall essence of the story, but the amount of jarring edits, strange audio design and visual effects bring what could be a GREAT rendition of the work down to something that's OK. Hopefully the editing gets better later on, there are quite some majestic scenes in the book that would definitely be difficult to portray in a visual medium.

You obviously not here to see the story, but look at visuals, we fans watch beyond the flashiness and understand that it is needed for suspense, and quick flashbacks, because this is not a book, but motion picture.

Thanks for posting! The books are awesome. It is also wonderful to not have generic western sci fi where everything has to be woke and diversified! So interesting experiencing sci fi from a Chinese perspective.

It's a great drama. If it will international movie, separate the culture part and make it in different culture version, it maybe more easier for all people (from different area) to be interested in

I'm in awe of this series. I honestly had no idea what to expect going in, but they have NAILED the vibes and themes of the book, and even improved upon the original story in some ways. I desperately want to see the entire series adapted by this team; this is a dream come true for fans.

I'd love to know if there have already been casting announcements for characters that appear in books two and three. Luo Ji is my favorite character in the whole series and I can't wait to see what he looks like in live action.
