My question is especially for those who learn Chinese as a hobby/for entertainment purposes. I get that they are different languages of different cultures but it seems that Japanese media is much more developed, uncensored and accessible, so I am curious.

I actually love watching Chinese dramas like The Untamed, Falling into your Smile or Love between Fairy and Devil. There is a huge amount of content available for free on YouTube, especially if you don't need English subs, so I am highly motivated to improve my language skills.

Haha my wife laughed thoroughly at your comment. She wanted me to watch Love between Fairy and Devil with her, and I (not a fan of chick flicks, let a lone an entire series) begrudgingly agreed. Turns out I enjoyed it as much as she did, and I listen to the soundtrack all the time now. 决爱 is one of my all time favorite Chinese songs

It's a more useful language, in general, as far as utility goes and being able to communicate with more people. A lot more opportunities to practice with strangers in the US as well.

Unfortunately I didn't start learning Chinese in high school (wish I had). They didn't even offer Japanese, neither did my college. It's just not a very popular second language for westerners, outside of people who just want to learn it for personal reasons.

I think that Chinese (Mandarin) is more useful because it's spoken by over 1 billion people and China is a fast developing country, it also has an easy grammar

Vacation to China booked for March 2020... But..., when I finally do go I'll be fluent

I took a Japanese course only to learn enough to realize no one was speaking Japanese around me. Way more Chinese and Koreans to converse with.

because i have no interest in the japanese culture or the language whatsoever

I wanted to learn Japanese for a long time and even had a friend who learned Japanese to almost fluency in fairly short time (3-4 years I think). But I never got further than learning hiragana.

But when I started reading (translated) Chinese Web novels and read the side notes of the translators... It kind of hit me how beautiful this language is and how the author played with poems in her work. That was almost one year ago and I'm still stuck with learning it (slowly but surely). Also the grammar seems to be fairly easy compared to polish (which I tried learning before chinese). Also knowing hanzi and their meaning helps to understand japanese texts to some extend.

Very interesting question and I love to read the answers! For me it’s ‘just’ because I find Japanese culture is considered very trendy at the moment and I find that Chinese is a bit overlooked in the mainstream and there’s a lot of prejudices surrounding it especially after covid. As such it attracts me more.

If you want to understand the history, culture and art of East Asia, then Chinese is the language to begin with.

Different people learn language for different reasons, even when it's just a hobby. I don't really care about media, it doesn't tend to be a motivator for me when it comes to learning a language. I mostly focus on personal connections and other facets of culture. Chinese is a popular language in my country relatively speaking, so that's one of the main reasons why I enjoy learning it.

I just love the way Mandarin sounds. Plus it is spoken by so many, even just in NYC. Like at my job, of my team of 40, six are native Mandarin speakers. : ). I run into Chinese people in NYC alllll the time, Japanese not often at all.

Weird question.A lot of people would have started studying Chinese without considering studying Japanese.

Agreed. Might as well ask why I chose Chinese over French

I just find Chinese history very interesting. And if I choose to research Japanese history later, I might find out a lot of the original sources are also in classical chinese

I always wanted to learn Japanese but the grammar, 4 different readings for a Kanji makes it so unappealing.Chinese has mostly 1 sound for 1 character. Basic and simple grammar.

I am much more interested in Chinese entertainment whether it’s music or dramas and the fact that you always have Chinese subs in dramas is a big advantage. Also the Chinese media in the recent years is developing in a fast pace and they are not up to Korean/Japanese level but it’s not underdeveloped either. Also it depends on your taste, I like history so the historical c dramas are up to my taste. Also other reasons but you specifically asked for entertainment/media reasons
