I'm honestly floored that America is literally a giant compared to other countries when it comes to its population. It's easy to forget that America is the third most populous country in the world. And it's only behind India and China, since their populations are 1 billions.
What do you guys think about this?

yes, like it's hard for me to wrap my head around a country where the weather and nature is even somewhat similar throughout. or a country where driving a couple hundred miles from home means you're leaving your country. or a country where you don't necessarily fly on a plane to get to the other side of it. that would be so different.

I drive 1 1/2 hours one way to go "big" grocery shopping ...3 hours (at least) total driving time. Usually once every other month for supplies and groceries to last for the whole month or longer.....with local shopping for fresh veggies and other perishable.
People in Europe don't grasp the size of the US It takes us longer than 2 hours to try to drive across the County that we live in. Longer than driving across some countries..
Even if we have the 3rd largest population....our country has some very sparsely populated areas (Nevada...looking at you!), so unless you go to a big city area...it doesn't feel "populated". The large section of the County that we live in averages about 7 people per square mile. I like it this way.

I distinctly remember in fourth grade we were looking at maps of the world to find “where your ancestors came from” and finding (East) Germany and thinking “that can’t be right. This is really small.” I knew the US is large - we did a lot of road trips when I was a kid. I just assumed- wrongly- that other countries in Europe were just as big as the US. I used to feel that way but then I stopped comparing the US to single countries, it's easier to compare the US to the EU
The states aren't as different but there is still a huge difference between Vermont and Alaska or Colorado and Louisiana or DC and North Dakota, in terms of culture, history, demographics, quality of life, politics
I'm obviously not saying that the states are as diverse as those in Europe, just that it makes more sense to compare states to countries in some situations

My best story for this is when I made friends in highschool with the exchange student from Sweden. I live in Kansas and we went somewhere in Oklahoma for some reason I can't remember why. He let out a wail and said how freaking big is this country.

People from smaller countries have a hard time wrapping their head around the size of our country. I have a friend from New Zealand who asked why we don't have a gondola that takes people from the bottom of the mountain to the top (we live in LA, so they were talking about Big Bear)... uhhhh, because our CITY has 3x the amount of people that your whole COUNTRY? Plus people are coming in from OC, San Diego etc. I know traffic up and down the mountain sucks, but it's not realistic to have some of the same luxuries smaller countries do.
All my friends from Aus, NZ, and the UK complain about about lack of public transit. Our cities are so big and there's so many people we cannot accommodate that- we dropped the ball big time and there is no going back right now. Canadians don't have a great transit system either because Canada is so large, and yet there's more people in my state then there is in all of Canada. Their public transit is better than ours, but it's still not what other nations have.
People have a really hard time understanding how big it is and how many people are actually here and what that means for us long term and on an everyday basis.

I think almost everybody, Americans and non-Americans, forgets how large of a population the US has.
This makes generalizations about the country especially irritating and short-sighted.
It also makes me more prone to identifying the state I’m from, rather than just saying I’m American.
I don’t necessarily feel like I identify well with others who are from regions far away from the states where I grew up and where I currently live. The feeling of disconnect is absolutely there for me.
Additionally, having such a large population makes it much more difficult to appropriately govern. There are just too many variables to account for in large countries to help with the needs/wants of everybody.

I think our government is a bit more insane to comprehend. Imagine having a country where the power comes from the states (some of which are country-sized), and the states don't immediately start in-fighting.
For most of history, I think countries have tended to favor centralized rule. "China" has done it since the Qin Dynasty, since every time the power of the provinces outweighs the central authority, they immediately start killing each other. See Warring States Era, Three Kingdoms Era, 16 Kingdoms Era, Republican Era.
