Always carry tissues. Lots of tissues.

Plus baby wipes. You'll be thankful after a night of eating questionable street food with the terrible "New Orleans Spice" that doesn't even exist in New Orleans.

Pipishaa
so funny, I m so stupid! I have never been to New Orleans or eaten any food from there so I just assumed it was at least based on some New Orleans recipe.

Bizarre that anyone would want to go and live in a new country and think they can change it suit their own perspective.
Super arrogant and entitled. I don’t mean you, I know there are plenty with this mentality.

According_Stress8995
I mean you can do some tiny little changes. I’ve fairly successfully taught my kinder class to reuse/recycle their trash where possible. I know that’s like trying to hold back the tide here but hey ho. Actually curious as to whether that kind of thing would be considered arrogant/entitled to you, or if you’re meaning other behaviors?

spandextim
I don’t see teaching the 3Rs as arrogant and entitled. Most international schools have an environmental angle in their curriculum and expect this to be taught. I guess even if you’re working in a bilingual school and hired as a western teacher you are expected to bring a western perspective into a classroom. And if there is anywhere to make a difference it’s in the classroom, right?
My issue would be if your project failed and this produced a massive chip on your shoulder and you went around shouting about how dirty and uncivilized Chinese people are, and how they constantly distribute single use plastic and nobody respects the recycling bins in your community and how the west is so much cleaner, and blah blah blah etc.

According_Stress8995
Yep agreed on all that.
I’m just saying I wouldn’t want foreign teachers to feel discouraged from doing positive things like this. Some degree of encouraging change is ok, but like you’re saying, it needs to be in the right context.
Also I’m under no pretense that I personally or the west in general is actually better. Just different. I for example will still waste an animal’s foot or head lol.

You are talking about the impact of generational mass migration to western countries, this thread is taking about a western expats and their barriers to having a fulfilling life in China. Not exactly an equal comparison.
Mohamed opening a mosque in London so he can practice his religion isn’t the same as a Ken going nuts about an old lady taking his photo, or a Karen having a meltdown because the shop attendant follows her around the shop.

CheesyCharliesPizza
LOL!
The "opening a Mosque" example is way more impactful and disruptive than the other examples you mentioned.
You've made the point opposite of what you were trying to argue for.

Don't try to make sense of everything. China is a different culture, if something doesn't affect you just let it go.
I have a workmate who gets mad at everything at the school, if they change the time of sth often or there is general chaos. It can be frustrating, but if it doesn't affect you that much just let it go.
I know it can be annoying but everyone lives in this 'chaos' and no one expects more of you from it, like they say 'when in Rome'.
This applies to everything.

This applies to life outside China too. I wish more people embraced a little bit of stoicism.

get a good ebike with a good battery (be safe on it, helmet etc.) get as fast wifi as you can (VPN kills internet speeds so you need it fast to start with). for water situation either get a little dispenser thing that takes big bottles and buy 20L bottles delivered via waimai, or alternatively just get a filtration system for ur sink.
I realise all this stuff costs quite a bit but this stuff is investment into ur quality of life

Andromeda0100
Agree with everything except "as fast wifi as you can". Regardless of how fast your internet is (10/100/1000mbps) if your VPN is slow and can only support 1-3-5mbps faster internet can''t do anything about that.
Therefore, get the internet with the speed you feel comfortable with, depending on how many people live and use the same internet, and how many devices (such as tv). Usually for 2-3 people 100-300mbps which is more than enough for anything.
China mobile for the phone and China Unicom for the home internet/gaming/downloads/speed.
If you own a phone number in China, there is a high chance that your phone provider will give you at least a year or multiple year 1 rmb a month home internet package, these promotions go around all the time. (call mobile provider and ask for promotions).
If your building does not support your phone provider for internet, you can''t have the promotion. (often indicated by ISP stickers in the elevator).
You can set your mobile provider menu and customer service to English so whenever you call them everything will be only in English. You have to call them first and ask them to change your menu language forever.

My life hack is never getting an e-bike. I realize this is high and mighty, but the minute you get an e-bike you are never cycling anywhere. Most Chinese cities are incredibly cycle friendly- and you get to be active, but the minute you get an e-bike you’re ebiking everywhere.

Really? cos ive found chinese cities to be incredibly cycle unfriendly. If ur on a bicycle you have to stay on the actual paths which are usually bumpy and badly maintained, full of holes and missing slabs. Unless you have a mountain bike the suspension will be worse than an ebikes and the roads are better maintained than the paths. Also its waaaay too hot and sweaty in guangdong to be cycling to and from work. I would understand owning a bicycle for the cardio but its not convenient at all.

You don’t need to learn dialect. Pretty much everyone understands mandarin even if they can’t speak it. Majority of young people will speak it too. Your mandarin just needs to be at a high enough level that they understand you are speaking to them in standard mandarin in the first place (tones, pronunciation matter)

Three words that have saved me: laugh it off.
An e-bike is honking at me to get out of the way on the sidewalk? Laugh it off.
The school I work for asks me to do a recruiting event the day before? Laugh it off.
Someone is staring at me? Laugh it off.
A mom is helping her small child pee outside? Laugh it off.
It’s the difference between being that happy foreigner who has a good time and that bitter one who complains about everything, hides in their home, and counts the days before they’re on the plane back home.

It depends .. I like my Chinese friends to do most things for me when we are together . Everything goes way smoother.. I only like to do some handy work around my apartment by myself . I don’t like to do most things by myself like getting a SIM card , haggling for a cheaper price , legal stuff and etc

MisterMarsupial
Oh, I mean like:
Cooking something
Fixing something
Organising something that has multiple moving parts
And I didn't mean doing stuff with Chinese mates, I mean when you're paying "professionals" to do something. The last "professional" that came into repaint the kitchen didn't put any dropsheets down, so the bench and tiles got covered in drips of paint.
I left a few years before covid, but the sparkies in the city I was in were licensed with a weekend course. That's it. A weekend course, bang, you're an electrician now, don't kill yourself!

china2023m
I agree but sometimes it’s better to have a Chinese friend help you . I can do most things alone but some I can’t . I let my friend find a professional and my friend will scold them or make sure they do a good job or even make them lower the price If they did a bad job.
I once bought a e-bike and it had issues . The place I bought it from blamed me and refused to refund . My Chinese friend talked to them and they refunded me immediately.
Professionals always try to take advantage of me if I don’t have a Chinese speaking friend around

Cause you look like a sexpat fuck boy with a comment like that. But yes practice safe sex

Eldryanyyy
Eh, I hope that’s not the reason. Saying ‘condoms’ isn’t remotely related to being a ‘sexpat’.
Why is it suddenly en vogue to pry into others private lives, and judge them for who they sleep with? Isn’t slut shaming a thing of the past by now?
The puritan perspective on sex that pervades 1/3 of the expat community is at least as ridiculous as the playboy mentality that pervades the ‘Sexpat’ 1/3…

It’s the context. How is condoms even remotely a ‘China life hack?’. It’s just common sense and this old man douchbag only wanted to say it to prove that he gets laid

My advice would be to try to cook at home. Chinese food is super cheap and not hard to make, the hardest part of any dish is mise en place, i.e. making sure all the ingredients are cut, washed, and out and ready before cooking.

You can find recipes on the app 下厨房 (best choice), or you can look for J Kenji-Lopez Alt videos on YouTube, or just search for the English translation of the recipe on YouTube and you'll find some auntie who can show you how it's done.
Ròu jiā mó (肉夹馍) for example, for 30 yuan you can make like six super stuffed ones filled to the brim instead of the limp dick ones you'll get for delivery.

Dumpling and Bao are both super simple to make, just YouTube a tutorial on how to wrap them. You can feed yourself a whole week of breakfast for less than 30 yuan, maybe even 10-20 yuan if you go vegetarian. You can even make your own dumpling wraps, they are literally just flour, water, and a sprinkle of salt, and will wrap easier than anything you can buy in the supermarket since those ones usually have some corn starch on them to prevent sticking.

Fry some dumplings with a slurry of corn starch, flour, and a dash of vinegar to make some delicious and easy pot stickers (锅贴).

Fried rice is also dirt cheap, just YouTube "Uncle Roger Fried Rice tutorial".

Noodles are also super simple. Scallion oil noodles (葱油面 ) take like 10 minutes to make and are also dirt cheap, maybe 6 yuan in total cost. If you make a big batch of the oil beforehand, you can have a total meal ready in literally five minutes. Any noodle dish is like this.
Try zhá jiàng miàn (炸酱面), a dish popular throughout East Asia and even in the Philippines where you fry some bean paste (黄豆酱 or 豆瓣酱) with mince meat. It's super delicious.

Curry is easy. Pan fry your vegetables, then toss everything into a pot (or preferably a pressure cooker) and let it reduce, then toss in coconut milk and the curry bricks in the end for a one pot meal. No effort needed. Stir if you care.

Huáng mèn jī (黄焖鸡) and sweet and sour spare ribs (糖醋排骨) are the same concept, just cook the meat or vegetables, add water and reduce. It's so easy.

You'll save a lot of money and make food that tastes better and is healthier than anything you'll find outside. Especially for cheaper dishes like dumplings where the sellers skimp out a ton on quality or quantity it's worth it to try.
edit: I should add you'll need to get a good seasoned wok. I recommend a solid steel one instead of the black ones, they season better over time, are easier to clean, and don't have any finish that can break off into food if you over clean them.
