Chinese cuisine is actually a misnomer. A well-respected book about Chinese cuisine mentions at least five very different styles (North, Shanghai, Cantonese, Szechuan, West).

That's what happens when you live in a capitalistic developed nation. Can't afford anything so both parents tend to work. Not enough time or money to make proper meals 3 times a day so at least one of those meals (emphasis on "at least") is quick and simple and devoid of anything worthwhile.

You have never visited a Chinese factory, I guess? Where the workers live in tiny rooms with all their mates? I’m not a fan of capitalism at all, but you can’t be serious about claiming that our stressful jobs or our work load keeps us from cooking, while in Southeast Asia people easily work 70-80 hours a week and still find the time for it. We‘re lazy as f…k, that’s why.

My wife is from Hong Kong and has claimed on occasion that she "lives to eat". Meanwhile, I'm a strict vegan and happy to eat raw vegetables. I've no problem snacking on a bag of raw spinache or carrots or popcorn. Food is fuel, and I don't see any reason to prioritise it beyond that.

A totally vegan diet is not healthy unless supplemented. You're ok for protein, iodine and vitamin B12? And there's no proof that veganism is "better for the environment". We'd end up with millions of acres of soy plants and absolutely no permaculture. Your wife must absolutely love living with such a self-righteous person. And raw popcorn would break your teeth surely. I mean, it wouldn't even be popped.

Agree with the comments about the high salt/oil/MSG levels in mainland Chinese cooking, especially in restaurants, canteens, on trains etc. The Chinese commenting on the bland contents of Western lunches don't realise many Westerners also eat leftovers from the night before - things like curries, casseroles, soups and yes...Chinese stir fries!

It was probably a health thing, I think everyone I know from England has at least tried one of those 'only eat meat/berries/mushrooms diets.
Chinese have them as well, my (Chinese) ex's mum was always eating mad rabbit food for her blood or whatever.

There is some truly terrible western food, sliced white bread chief among it - I mean who imagines that Corn Flakes, Frosties and the rest can possibly be any good as a breakfast, we've been conned there big time. Asian food by contrast with its multiple ingredients, fresh vegetables, and flavour rich spices is a treat. Lucky we live in Australia where we have possibly the world's best choice of food. Within 100 metres of my door there are Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai restaurants, all delicious, as well as one of those Poke bowl places, and a great Italian.

Most all the bread at Fast food places is factory bread,ground out in huge factories-and white,white,white- nutritionaly dead bread...
(Great for your kids,by the way)...
And sometimes with canned dead tuna on the dead bread-tuna 'salad'....'sandwich'...
The Chines already eat nutritionally dead White rice- might as well join the rest eating dead bread and dead tuna.

Agreed ... you can't beat a great hand-made loaf/artisan bread with tasty ingredients and lots of fibre. Ditto brown rice has so much more flavour although it takes much longer to cook.

I know that it's possible to live on brown rice. I think it was in Tenko. The husks have vitamin C I believe.

There are sandwiches and then there are sandwiches. A couple of slices of sliced white bread with slivers of processed meat and cheese is at best "entry level". A full on Philly cheese steak or Ruben is on a different plane -- there really are so many ways to make a sandwich you could never run out.
