Not really a regret, but I wouldn't have bothered to spend a winter in Sicily. Food and the people are nice, but the place is a hole (IMO). Infrastructure, streets, rubbish collection etc... South American towns and cities I visited were cleaner. Even the natural areas that you'd consider to be of outstanding beauty were running by bags of rubbish dumped all over them, dead animals, refrigerators etc..

Feel like this could describe lot of southern Italy. A few bright spots with a lot of grime. We went to Amalfi and visited a few towns in and around south of Naples. Some areas could be absolutely putrid and filthy especially near public transport

I had this same discussion a few times. People tell me Dubai is nice. I ask what's there. They say Hotels and Malls. Ok, what else? You can go to the malls. Ok, what else? It has amazing hotels. Anything else? Just hotels and malls.
Seeing the dessert at night does sound amazing though.

I had this same discussion a few times. People tell me Dubai is nice. I ask what's there. They say Hotels and Malls. Ok, what else? You can go to the malls. Ok, what else? It has amazing hotels. Anything else? Just hotels and malls.

I will say, I spent time in Deira, so-called "Old Dubai" which means old as in built in the 60s. It is fascinating. I wouldn't say an amazing destination but if you have to be in Dubai and need to get away from the malls, Deira is where a lot of immigrants live to make it. Unlike the rest of Dubai where that means horribly exploited construction workers, this is more like small merchants who have actually been in Dubai for a few generations.
It kind of reminds me of Queens in that respect. Only part of Dubai that seemed real. If you are there in the winter, walking around the neighborhood looking at the small shops and street life of Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Persian/Filipino merchants is really cool. Plus the best Persian food I've ever had in my life.
Again, not worth going just for that but if you are there, then definitely go.

Casual lying about everything from everyone, a taxi will take you 1KM and claim it was 10KM when that's physically impossible. Taxi drivers telling you your hotel is shut due to fire/rats/whatever and trying to direct you to his friends place for a kickback. Basically any time you interact with the locals they are trying to scam you. The rubbish everywhere, mountains of plastic waste and rivers of sewage with the smell that gives off.
Plus the lack of meat. No problem with a meat free diet actually, but it does mean you have to eat more often, which means more chances to get food poisoning.

Came to say this. I had a long rant about India, first post on my profile.
There are things you can prepare for: poverty, dirt, lack of infrastructure. But you can't prepare for the people. And I had way too many experiences like you described.

And the scams changed to "you won a bottle of champagne" timeshare like scams. They actually had western girls on the payroll pushing those scams on foreigners, which was a new thing.
I didn't stay in Kerala long, but I'm sure it had begging and endless aggressive sales.

Hm maybe depends where you go. I spent a lot of time in South goa and the nature in kerala. Those were peaceful places with not so many scammers. I think I had only two scam attempts on me neither of which was all that bad. I didn’t spend much time in the really big cities in india though

You're right. The countryside is nice. But countryside in one country is much like countryside in another. It's the cities and the historic sites that are radically different and that's what I wanted to see.

It depends what you’re after from your trip. We like to get a feel for a place and our focus is eating and drinking, visiting local markets, just seeing and experiencing life. We went to a local market in Casablanca and the vendors were all very friendly - not aggressive or pushy like those in Jemaa El Fnaa in Marrakesh - just happy to chat. We did a lot of walking, visited the corniche, medinas & mosque and really enjoyed ourselves.

I haven't explored much of the Philippines, but Palawan island is really nice. But, when I was there 10 years ago, I couldn't get a great internet connection. Thus, it was great as a tourist but wouldn't have worked as a digital nomad. I have no idea what the situation is like now.

Had the same experience with Paris, I felt as if at least 10% of locals were trying to scam me, though once you go outside of city center to, let's say Disneyland, it gets OK, the locals get much friendlier and I'm not worried about my safety anymore.

In my opinion Rome is worth a week, no longer. You can see the sights in that time and then leave. Rome and Manila are probably my least favorite places so far if that tells you anything. Rome as a place to live, it isn't cheap, there is garbage on the ground everywhere, public transportation isn't reliable. If you fly in you pay to get from the airport to town. There are better places to eat pizza, pasta, and gelato.

Half the English speaking visitors we saw were making their way north to south and doing the same trips to Halong Bay, motorbiking Hai Van Pass and visiting the Na Trang beaches. It’s sort of become a cookie cutter itinerary and I think that’s part of the problem.
We travelled down by train and stopped at a few of the lesser known places and had a great time.

Belfast, Northern Ireland Hear me out- I'm sure there are great qualities about belfast that I couldn't encounter in my 2 days there. Belfast is a war zone. There is a 20' wall built between the Catholic/Irish side and the Protestant/English. I'm not exaggerating on the height of this wall. Google 'belfast wall.' I did the black can tour (#1 rated experience on TripAdvisor) in a van, I was alone, so I sat in the front seat and really talked with the 40'ish dad driver. The tour goes back and forth on each side of the wall with murals about those who've died as a result of 'the troubles'. Spoiler- it was kids, grandmas, and other innocent people. After 4 murals, I [M38] but highly sensitive was very emotional. Hearing the stories it is heart breaking. Great tour, but very real. After the black cab tour I went to the Titanic exhibit because it was built in Belfast. The exhibit is very good, but the obvious undertone of "thousands of people died" then a wall at the end with every name projected on a wall, that's when I started crying again. Overall Belfast was an emotional visit, and for me- not in a good way. I won't be going back.

Belfast, Northern Ireland Hear me out- I'm sure there are great qualities about belfast that I couldn't encounter in my 2 days there. Belfast is a war zone. There is a 20' wall built between the Catholic/Irish side and the Protestant/English. I'm not exaggerating on the height of this wall. Google 'belfast wall.' I did the black can tour (#1 rated experience on TripAdvisor) in a van, I was alone, so I sat in the front seat and really talked with the 40'ish dad driver. The tour goes back and forth on each side of the wall with murals about those who've died as a result of 'the troubles'. Spoiler- it was kids, grandmas, and other innocent people. After 4 murals, I [M38] but highly sensitive was very emotional. Hearing the stories it is heart breaking. Great tour, but very real.
