Sorry to say, india, for me, is a no go zone. Pick pockets, scammers, cheaters spread everywhere. Taxi, rickshaw, bus, train everywhere looters. They charge very high if they know you are a new visitor. Even in a running bus or train , if you are assaulted, harreshed by someone, the other passengers around you will not come forward to comfort you, to support you, to save you from the atrocities. But they just witness this very comfortably!

You can find no help from anyone. You can be robbed by a taxi, auto rickshaw and shop keeper or a hotel owner. In the bus park, train station they give you wrong information. After riding a train or bus, they start pushing you, they suffer you from their unmannered, rude behavior. Even if you cry for their mistreatment, no one will show a little sympathy. If you are in a hotel room with your wife, you are unsafe. Any time hotel staff or other gang with the support of hotel staff can enter into your room and can take your wife away. If you phone the police, trust me, they will ask you for bribe first. I promise I will never put my feet on the horribly dirty land again in my life. I have a big trauma about.

I am an Indian living in US for several years and am “Americanized”, and settled in US. So far I did visit India 3 times as a tourist, once for 3 weeks, another for 60 days, and the third one for 5 weeks. Every time I visit India, I look for public “toilets/bathrooms” their location and cleanliness in the cities I visit for convenience. Here are some of my experiences visiting India and how some perceptions developed after various situations and circumstances:

1. Asking larger train stations (like Mumbai, Delhi, Howrah etc) ticket staff, what’s the “best” time to come to the station to buy a long distance train ticket, trying to avoid crowds. I found out from my own experience (thank God for my fluent Hindi, compliments to Bollywood dialogue movies :-), the railway station “coolies” have very practical solutions for arrival and catching trains for a particular express train , and on which platform and at what time. Coolies are very knowledgeable and informative about trains, and they even told me a strategy how to hop on the train when it is crowded, especially in 2nd class passenger train. I always tip the coolies extra, even when they just carry my light carry-on bag, I still hire them and tip them accordingly.

2. On long distance trains, such as Himsagar Express ( 3nights), Guwahati Express (3 nights) or Kerala Express (2 nights) or other overnight express trains, I wake up at 5:30am and go to the lavatory (bathroom) and clean myself before fellow passengers start waking up around 8am, yes, around 8am. Indian train passengers love to sleep in late and slowly get back to breakfast or talk, or holler at chaiwallas for tea or vadawallas or order breakfast from the train compartment attendant.

3. There seems to be quite a demand for street chaiwalla stand for tea around 4pm, and this is in Mumbai, not far from CSTM train station, formerly VT station. There were almost 50 people standing in que (line) just to get a small plastic cup of tea.

4. I felt guilty hiring the “human rickshaw” puller in Kolkata on Sudder Street to take me to Mother Teresa’s House (grave). A man at the internet cafe called the rickshaw puller quickly and told him to take me to Mother’s House. The rickshaw puller was very happy and enthusiastic to take me to Mother’s House, and he was older than me, more like my uncle or very older brother. But, I wasn’t thrilled inside of me, felt guilty, but, I managed to ride with him. He knew all the short cuts from the back alleys, and in about 15 minutes or so, I reached Mother’s House for a visit.

5. I took a overnight bus from Jaipur to Udaipur in Rajasthan on my first visit to India, in winter month (November). I had the jacket, still cold, and too bumpy ride throughout night. On my 2nd visit to India, I took an overnight bus from Manali (Himachal Pradesh) to Chandigar (Punjab). Couldn’t sleep on bus, and every stop, bus passengers want to eat refreshments and food (and this is between 8pm to 6am following morning). During my 2nd visit, I took a daytime bus from Jammu to Srinagar. Back than the security was very tight, and the para-military told the bus driver somewhere after 6 hour bus ride around 6pm, to stop driving and stay at some hostel for overnight, and start driving in the morning to Srinagar for passenger safety. I made up my mind no more overnight and long distance bus travel in India. Wherever the train goes, I go. :-).

I’ve to admit, Indian long distance train travels are more adventurous and comfortable. Very interesting passengers along the way, and most of them are friendly and hospitable as well as helpful. Bengalis in Kolkata are very talkative and lively on their metro and commuter trains, whereas, commuters in Mumbai are very quite on their local trains. Most of my long distance travels in Indian railways was on 2AC (air-condition). There was Indrail Pass (for convenience and maximum train travel across Indian railways and regions) for foreigners till 2017 on Indian Railways/trains, and was discontinued. I traveled twice on Indrail pass in India visiting several long distance cities within time periods of the Indrail pass. Once on a 60 day pass, another on a 30 day pass.

直到2017年,印度铁路/火车上还有Indrail Pass(为了方便和最大限度地跨越印度铁路和地区的火车旅行)供外国人使用,后来被取消了。

I hope you enjoyed reading my experiences in India, the perceptions I got out of it, and I did share with my friends.

Positive: lots of respected doctors and scientists. Duty. Family honor. Religious and philosophical tolerance and respect about atheism to agnosticism to various religions. Obey rules. Spend any amount of money for kids tuition (but only that). Earn a lot of money and save a boatload.

Negative perception is the smell (lack of deodorant), lack of sense of comedy or humour, inflexibility in food or entertainment (everything must be Indian), and hence a lack of open-mindedness. Not able to dress well, socially inept, no understanding or respect for aesthetics. Women are prudish and men are awkward socially. Treat kids not so well, they do not allow kids to be very happy(many appear depressed, not fitting into their peer groups unless they are in controlled situations with a lot of nerds). Do not know how to have fun or live life.

Before people visit India, the general perception around the world is that India is a poor, developing, and chaotic country with a large population. People often expect to see a lot of poverty, pollution, and a lot of cultural differences.
After people visit India, their perception of the country changes significantly. They are often amazed by the vibrant culture, the delicious food, and the hospitality of the people. They also appreciate the country’s rich history and diversity. Additionally, many people find the country’s natural beauty and architecture to be quite stunning. In general, people come away with a newfound appreciation for India and its people.

Manish Jaiswal
The perception of India and Indians around the world varies from person to person and culture to culture. However, it is often shaped by stereotypes and media portrayals that do not fully capture the depth and diversity of our country.
Many people who visit India for the first time are often struck by the warmth and hospitality of its people, as well as the richness of its culture and history. They are also often amazed by the complexity and contradictions that exist in our society, and the challenges that we face as a nation.

It is important to recognize that our country is not without its flaws, and there are many issues that we need to address as a society. However, we must also celebrate the many strengths and gifts that India has to offer, and work to build a brighter future for all.

Let us continue to welcome visitors from around the world with open arms, and share the beauty and wisdom of our culture with all those who are willing to learn and grow.

Who cares!!!??? After a thousand years of persecution including a GENOCIDE of 90 million Indians by Muslim invaders and 66 million by the British — Indians don’t give or at least shouldn’t give a damn what the rest of the world thinks of them! Let these barbaric, intolerant and bigoted people think whatever they want — Indians should do what they want and say what they think and a pox on anyone that has a problem with that. Be strong in your own strength and culture and don’t worry about the perceptions of those destined for history’s dust bin!

India suffers from the worst preception problems of any country.
Most people who travel here are under the impression only one version of India exists.
My perception of India is that they are the same as everyone else!
The narrow image portrayed of India hurts the numbers and types of people who are willing to visit this great country.
I don't do yoga, meditation or eat vegetables, and I live a regular life here.
If people have their eyes open, they will see India and they will realise what is here - people trying to survive and have a good life (just like everyone else:)

Not great. Between the terrifyingly high rape rates, the blatant disregard for animal/human life (minus cows, like really?) the mistreatment of foreigners (ya, every country does it, but you guys are Much worse) the treatment of women as property, the sheer lack of sanitation of any kind aka wiping your ass with your bare hands and feces in the streets (starting to sound like California…)

there just isn't a great view of the place. Not to mention, It would seem as though a solid 50% of the population is involved in some scamming ring or other. The Indians I've met that come here (murica) are incredibly kind, respectful, intelligent, and hard working however, and I assume they are of a different class, or maybe only the highly motivated and successful can make the journey here possible. I talk to Indians from all parts of India daily (ones that still reside there) and the arrogance and blatant racism towards whites, blacks, and some Asian groups is exhausting and astounding all at once. (I am native American).

On that note .. I find it incredibly odd how America and white people are always flagged for their racism… when in truth, and with my vast experience (meeting with foreigners) they are by FAR the least racist group of people I have encountered. Now, every group has racists of course, but I can gamble my life on the fact that the Chinese, and Indians are by far the most hateful and racist individuals you can find. These things and many more are why India has a crushingly negative view from the rest of the planet.

The general perception is not good. I had the fortune of travelling abroad quite a few times.
The people ask how the humans and cows walk on the street. They also feel that generally people are illiterate and poor and can't afford two square meals daily. They also ask whether during elections money and gifts are given by politicians. Those who have seen the Taj Mahal wanted to know how such a beautiful moment is along a dirty river.
I prefer to explain as far as possible. But they say that only what has been seen by their friends is all they know.

Why do you care..are u so insecure that opinion of irrelevant foreigners matter to you..i mean it's ok if they have relevance in your life..maybe your friend or your boss or your love or business associates and clients..but if they are random strangers would u spend your time and attention trying to impress them and bending over backwards for their attention..come on India grow up..we are 73 year old(since independence)..welcome them, respect them and their personal space but don't demean yourself and the nation flattering them

Before people visit India, they see a subset of Indians abroad.
If they live in the EU/Australia/Japan/USA/South Korea … they will think of Indians as highly productive, ingenious, nerdy and reliable.
If they live in the Middle East then they will look down upon Indians with contempt, as most Indians are seen working subordinate roles or manual labour.

When they visit India, they see its filthy streets, its polluted cities, its overpopulation, lack of education and reluctance to open up to the world. Any romantics notions of Yoga, mysticism etc… are destroyed by what they see.
