We have lots of disparities among rich and poor.
India is only country in world which is rich in resources and therefore one can live here without work as they get free food under food security bill.

Not only that millions of people had entered India over centuries for loot and plunder. Most of the raiders and invaders came in to prosper and become rich by spoils of invasion. These invaders reduced India to grim poverty. India in ancient times before the invasion of Turks and Afghans and Moguls was a rich and prosperous nation but Mugals and Sultans reduced it to ashes.

Even after independence in 1947, India keeps on adding to its poor by illegal infiltration of poor from Bangladesh and now even from Pakistan.
All the gains and resources are being absorbed by illegal migrants and the original inhabitants of India, the Hindus are fast dwindling. The population of accredited total Pakistanis and Bangladeshis in India is increasing fast which after just 50 years will surpass Hindus in subcontinent.

Well, I can only talk about my own experience.
But I had a pretty daft perception.
I felt I was pretty well read, well educated and “worldly”. I was only 28 so that’s pretty hilarious in hindsight.
I assumed I would not hear any rock music, would not be able to get beef, would find it difficult to get western clothes, would have to eat curry every day, people wouldn’t speak much English, and wouldn’t know much about the west.

Oh dear.
I was so so so wrong.
I learnt about radio Indigo in Bangalore in my first few days there. It’s an English radio station which plays rock music, new music and I was very surprised to hear Australian singer John Farnham! There are lost of pubs in Bangalore which play rock and pop music, in fact I can’t think of anywhere to go to hear Bollywood music.

The second day that I was there I went to a restaurant and had a steak for lunch. It’s possible that it was buffalo as opposed to beef, but it was pretty close to being beef.
There are lots of malls, with lots of western clothes available. Over the time I lived there Zara, Steve Madden, Paul Frank, Sephora, MAC all opened up.

In terms of Indian people… I thought they would not be as “worldly” as me. Of course, some Indians aren’t, but a lot are. Especially my colleagues and people I met at parties etc. Most of them were far more educated, intelligent, well-traveled and reflective than ignorant, arrogant western me.

Now when I want advice on almost anything, business, money, family, travel I ask one of my Indian friends. I know they will know far more about it than I do, and they will definitely help me.
So I guess that gives you an idea of how I initally thought and how I think now. Pretty much a complete 360.

India is a country where you spirit revive if you are going from bad phase.
India is a country which contains rich heritage, culture etc things but if you really want to explore India than you should have to live with a Indian family. A Indian family is some how different from Western countries families the reason why I am saying this because we have a great bond in family. We laugh ,we crack jokes we even quarrel but if someone says bad about his or her family we never forget.

Foreigners when came to India they some time says India is a chaotic country. I know as we have a lot of people in this country due to these almost each and every place is crowded but we are not chaotic at all.
They think that we do yoga all day . The answer is no .

India is a poor country some foreigners also thought this . You must know that we are not at all poor . We have some of the richest person in the world as well as some of the kindest person in the world

When you visit India if you are going to someone house if his or her family is poor then don't worry because India is a country where old people of India always taught us about Vasudev kutumkam and atithi Devi bhav ,these are two sanskrit sentence . The first sentence means whole world is our family and second statement says guest is god . His or her family will remain hungry whole night but they give you good first. If someone house is small they offer there bed to you and they will sleep on the floors.
India is a great country.

Indians are everywhere and I am amazed how Indians won every country’s heart!! Indians are doctors and scientists. They are most talented chefs. Americans have great respect for Indian doctors. They do not have big ego. They can advise their friends and family free of cost.
I am proud Indian living in US. I respect American culture as well. I salute those Americans who trust Indian doctors and employees.
I salute those Indian teachers who taught such talented doctors.

Generally, people think India as poor country. Dirty, pollutions, uncivilized, densely populated, cultured, Bhudda's place, are the words described to India.
The moment you are in India, poverty is no surprise. You will recall the story of Buddha. And feel what he actually felt. You can see few skyscrapers but you will see 100s of miles filled with small huts. Beggers, old age, sick, crowded, dirt, you have to literally stop and give way to cows that are just wondering in towns. I have seen security guards with guns in front of police stations. And that was very strange. The rivers are polluted like literally can't even stay near. The smell is so awful. Forget swimming.
It's just opposite of China. Something is really wrong in India.

Idomus Filmas
I think it overall differs depending on who's having this perception.
But I think India is generally associated with Hindu gods and spirituality, meditation, reincarnation, vegetarianism, yoga, Bollywood, Miss World always being an Indian, the Himalayas and yogis, sarees, bindis and holy cows, also (nearly forgot) Kama Sutra…

So basically the general view of Indians (well for me) always used to be as goody-goody people wearing white kurta pyjamas, meditating, praying and fasting all day, being perfectly calm and peaceful (like Gandhi-ji). Also being extremely spiritual and non materialistic.

Indian women always were for me as the embodiments of femininity: long hair, beautiful jewelry, beautiful clothes. They also used to seem more family focused and very calm and perfect. I'm myself a woman but I always loved Indian women more because of their hair, bindi, beautiful figures and saree.
India is an Asian country/culture but it always seemed very European to me, more than Japan or Saudi Arabia, for example. I actually always thought that Indians as a race were Europeans (I don't know if it makes sense though).

So basically I used to see India as perfectly traditional place with perfectly spiritual people who have a very good artistic sense too because of all the ghaghras and kurtas and jewelry that used to be imported in our country (Lithuania). Also I imagined India as beautiful as in those Bhagvad Gita paintings with Krishna and gopis on the “jhoola” in the jungle. Like a paradise. I used to deliberately ignore the news reports on accidents, floods, explotions or protests in India were you could only see a huge crowd of people gathered around a broken bus.

When I actually started to live ijn India in 2009 (until now) perception of course changed a litte. I started seeing Indian as a very large huge place with many cultures, languages and races. No one could be generalized because each person became a personality. I started to think a bit like an Indian but as someone who is from a ex socialist country I could never quite grasp the class/caste system (even UK has a class system “blue blood, working class, royal blood etc” but in my country there is none). So I still sweep the aangan of my house and neighbors hate it (“let the sweeper do that! “).

Also I've noticed that people are quite materialistic in terms that money matters a lot in a country where there's a weak social security and families still depend on each other. But surprisingly I saw spiritualism in sharing that Indian people like doing a lot. They'd always share their food, their tea, their clothes, their chips, their help etc. And I realized how selfish I really was.

Basically India is changing very fast and it's not anymore the traditional 7000 BC culture like the one we see in “Bahubali” movie, it's now becoming like the West where to wear a saree is not anymore “modern” (no matter how modern the saree print and design might be), I was actually shamed for wearing a salwar suit and toe rings (basically I used to copy my mother in law or even maids because I thought they looked “cool”) but my age Indian women don't wear that stuff on a daily basis (I mean some do but many don't as well). I was shamed for washibg aangan “because maid bahi aaee”… Some teens were passing by and said “look, angrez is washing the aangan ha ha ha”… I mean so people keep calling me angrez every day and it sucks, but they're not wrong in that.

My husband had a friend from Goa who was called something that foreigners from Africa are called and I asked a Manipuri girl where is she from because she looked just like my Filipino friend, so it happens…

I like living in India and having a good family life here. Everything is family friendly here, I get access to many things I like here. I can't eat bland European food anymore, I became more like an Indian from inside but not from outside of course. I'm still learning and trying to adapt, but I'm more focusing on my daughter who is 11 and is a real Indian. I've learned wearing a saree and stitching suits so that I can help out her to wear Indian clothes one day when she wants it.

We wentg to Europe this summer to visit my family and many people were very interested in the fact that we are from India. They were asking for gifts and ladoos from India. So they know that India has tasty sweets! Also they think India is very far away and must be pretty different so they thought life is difficult there but as soon as you explain it to them they feel well informed and enlightened about India.

I have interacted with people from India in my native land Bangladesh. I have interacted with many Indians in US as well and visited India several times. There is so much diversity in India that it is very challenging to form an impression that would do justice to all (I will try though). Kindly don’t be offended.

1) Indians display patriotism a lot. People usually say that they love their country and say India is the best place in the world.
2) A lot of people eat vegetarian food. I didn’t realize vegetarian food could be as good as non-vegetarian food. Probably the best country in the world for vegetarian food.
3) Strong preference to study Engineering and Medicine.
4) Compared to Bangladesh people in India visit movie theaters more. Perhaps because Bollywood is a more vibrant film industry than Bangladesh film industry.

5) Tend to both like and dislike U.S politically.
6) Some people display anti-Muslim prejudice. Less in South and more in North.
7) Anti-Pakistan sentiment is very strong.

8) Mild negativity towards China.
9) Condescending attitude towards smaller neighbors like Srilanka and Bangladesh among some.
10) Loves cricket and tea. (Same in Bangladesh).
11) Sweets similar to Bangladesh. I like Gulabjamun in India a lot.
12) A lot of women are attractive and well behaved. (Specially South) .
13) It’s a land of contradictions and very fascinating. You need to visit India to know what that means.

I agree that perception of India abroad is not generally good .They think that India is still in late 17 th century .Govt should publicise modern India in media abroad .Embassies overseas can do much in this matter .Promotion of Tourism is another good option .
