I am a native Japanese, but I cannot tell the difference until I talk to them.
When I went to Taiwan, no one could tell that I was Japanese until I opened my mouth.

Even in the Philippines, people couldn’t tell that I was Japanese. I have kind of dark skin and big eyes for an East Asian. They figured out that I was Japanese because they talked to me in Tagalog but I responded in English.
I am pretty sure I can assimilate into whatever East/Southeast Asian nationality if I know their language well.
So in reality, even Asian people cannot tell the difference.

I’m Cantonese. I can definitely tell the difference between northern Han Chinese and the southern minority Chinese. Northern Chinese are tall, light skinned and strongly built. The ones that live near the border with North Korea are actually ethnically Korean, but just so happen to live on the Chinese side of the border so they are Chinese in nationality and will speak Chinese but they are still Korean.

Physically speaking, northern Han Chinese look almost identical to Koreans who are also tall, light skinned and strongly built and I’m sure they share very similar genetics. Where my family hails from in the southern tropical part of China, we are darker skinned and have rounder faces. My grandparents and ancestors where shorter, but the last few generations of southern Chinese have also grown tall due to better nutrition so the height factor today is not a determining factor. Again, in terms of just physical appearance alone, I’ve always mistaken South Koreans to be also Chinese and have spoken Chinese to them, to which they politely correct me with “Sorry, I’m actually Korean.” LOL.

What makes things even more complicated is that there has been cross migration between both China and the two Koreas at various points in history. So there are Koreans living in China that eventually intermarried into the local Chinese population, but also some Chinese people have settled down in one of the two Koreas an married into the local Korean population. As for Japanese people, I can’t promise that I can immediately spot a Japanese person out of a crowd of say Chinese people or Korean people, but if I see a Japanese person individually, they might have a few slight differences in facial features and shape and size of their eyes that would make me exclude Chinese or Korean from their possible ethnicity. And that owes to the fact that the modern Japanese are actually a mix of East Asian (mostly ancient Korean ancestry) and an indigenous tribe that was already living on the islands called the Ainu. This indigenous tribe looks nothing like what you would picture a typical East Asian Chinese or Korean person, and perhaps more akin to some Caucasian populations believe it or not.

So for Japanese, they do look a bit more different from Chinese and Korean people. But to be honest, generally speaking, the physical differences between all three ethnicities are so small that even many Asians including myself have made mistakes. Not to mention, a Chinese person could always learn to speak Korean or Japanese and vice-versa, so that would REALLY be confusing LOL. For instance, here is a picture of me with my good friend Yuka. As you’ve already guessed, she is Japanese. But when people see us together, they think we are family (which we are, just not in the blood sense). So even after everything I just told y’all that Japanese people tend to look more distinct from Chinese and Korean, that isn’t always the case.

I have a supervisor one year above me. I thought she’s someone from one of many indigenous ethnicity in my country (she has brown skin and round face and eyes) until one day she said she’s actually a Chinese ethnic from southern China (probably Yunan). She showed me photos of southern Chinese people and I was amazed that I didn’t see any significant differences between indigenous ethnicities in my country and southern Chinese people.

99% of Southern Chinese are Hakkas. There is no such Cantonese Race, but simply a Cantonese Dialect. The question that can you tell between a Southern Korean, Chinese, Japanese or Taiwanese is they are all the same Chinese ancestry. Hakkas are ashamed of themselves, in that they claimed to be Cantonese. Canton is a City and everyone claim there are Cantonese.

lst glance, I would not be able to distinguish Chinese and Koreans. But for a Japanese, I am able to spot them faster, probably due to their dressing and some facial characteristic. But usually, if all 3 are miggling together probably in a supermarket or restaurant, I can identify them through their speech/language. Some similar identities especially among the 3 nationalities are their religions. All 3 practices Taoism (Confucionism), Buddhism and Christianity. Although they vary in percentage to each religion. The height and facial features of Koreans and Chinese bear more similiarities from my observations. My son is naturally handsome. One day, he went to a Korean restaurant and the boss asked if he is Korean. See, the Koreans also cannot differentiate between Chinese and Koreans. Many strangers also asked if he is Korean? Ha Ha.

Don’t worry. I’m Chinese American, and people usually can’t make out that I’m Chinese descent, including Chinese. I’m light skinned, and I tried to get tan and toned, but it just does not workout. When I get a sun tan, then I peel. My light complexion with good tone returns. My wife along many ladies get very jealous of my skin type. I’m also stalky and average height 5’9. Many people think Chinese men are short and skinny, maybe dark complexion. I also have high nose, double eye lid, and thick eye brows. Not typical Chinese I guess. People usually will guess that I’m more like Japanese or Korean than Chinese. Don’t worry. It’s not easy. My wife is half Chinese and half Korean, and she looks more korean. My daughter looks like Caucasian because she is very light skinned, and her hair is actually brown. Not sure why. Both my wife and I have very dark and shiny hair.

Mike, do you happen to know where your particular ancestors came from? From your descxtion of yourself, I would venture to assume you are most likely of Northern Han Chinese descent. Anyway good chatting hope you are well.

My ancestry is Anhui, but I have a uncommon family. It used to be 2 words, later shorten to one to comply with Han format. According to Baidu, my family start to appear during waring state period in the state of Qi, today’s Shandong. My family name could be traced to Manchuria and Mongolia as well.

Truth be told, I was avoiding this one, but since I was A2A… here goes.
I can most often guess the nationality of East Asians in person by looks, body language, mannerisms, fashion, or a combination of those things. At the very least I can usually tell when someone is not Japanese, since I have lived in Japan for a long time, am married to one, and most familiar with typical Japanese appearance.
That being said, some people are just not typical, so it’s never 100%.
As for the photo, I will start with the disclaimer that photos are way more difficult than in person, because the tell tale mannerism, posture, and fashion clues are absent or less obvious.

For what it’s worth, I agree with the others who said that she looks like she was raised, or spent some good amount of time, in the US (because of the way she is smiling, and facial muscles). At first I thought Chinese, because her nose is a bit wider than Japanese (and Koreans? Maybe?) typically have, and because of her lack of make-up. But, her prominent cheek bones and coloring make me think Korean.
The longer I look at the picture the less sure I am!
I’ll guess Korean.

No idea about Japanese, but Chinese and Koreans have very different mannerisms.
Our looks are also more different than I previously thought, when I met Chinese students.
Growing up I heard from other Koreans that I look Chinese, and I believed it lol. Like I always felt that I looked more ‘southern mongoloid’ than the average Korean. But I felt and looked very Korean when I actually met Chinese and saw each other in the mirror lol. Pretty interesting, never felt that before with other Koreans.
Koreans basically have more pronounced Mongoloid features, like larger facial bones (zygomatic cheekbones, maxilla), and their skin tone is simultaneously whiter and browner than that of Chinese, which is more gold-ish. Also more monolid eyes in Koreans.

About the facial bones, picture it like Koreans’ faces are slightly larger relative to the rest of their head.
Chinese are basically Korean gene stock with slight Melanesian blood that gracilizes their features a little. Since the Melanesian blood seeps up from SE Asia into China, with less admixture the more you go up north.
Northern Chinese can sometimes look Korean based on the few pictures I’ve seen on the internet.

However based on the one Japanese person I met in America, I thought she looked Tibetan or Mongolian when I first met her, and was a little caught off guard.
I think Japanese are a weird mixture of Korean type gene stock and SE Asians, but they still look different from Chinese, probably due to the Jomon DNA.
Japanese look like a gracilized version of Koreans, due to their pseudo-caucasoid Jomon blood that reduces their Mongoloid features. Hence they have smaller jaws and cheekbones that sometimes make them look pseudo-Latino.

Generally, it is impossible to tell between Korean, Japanese, and Chinese persons from their faces or physical appearance alone. Fashion is usually an indicator but the majority of Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese could be either.
For anyone who thinks otherwise, I challenge any who are not KPOP fans to try to pick out the non-Koreans in this picture:

The ladies here are a KPOP girl group ‘Twice.’ I am Korean but not a KPOP fan so I have no idea who is who, but I remember hearing that some of these ladies are not Korean.

Korean girls are the sexiest on average tho if you just pick out a random girl on the street from Shanghai vs Seoul vs Tokyo. They show the most skin. This is probably not due to the fact that Korea is the most conservative country out of all of them but because they are the most patriarchal and thus the women have to appeal to the men the most in that country.

Only way for me to pin down is based in their mannerism, clothing and accessories worn.
Even among Chinese - there's a wide “dispersion” of looks - ie. Southerners different than northerners, and among Japanese - Okinawans vs others.
Koreans - quite close to North Eastern Chinese - as there's quite a free flow of people in that region.
My guess is that she's more Chinese / Korean.

I often see many foreigners comparing Korea and Japan to China. I am a Korean who worked with many Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asians while working for an international organization located in Geneva, Switzerland. From my point of view as an ex-international civil servant, in conclusion, Korea and Japan are remarkably similar to the people of the following countries in terms of language, and traditional cultures, etc.; Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Sakha Republic and Turkey. That is why Korea and Turkey refer to each other as brotherly countries.

And the people of these countries can speak Korean fairly well even if they live in Korea for only one year. On the other hand, the people who are close to the Chinese in traditional culture and way of thinking are the people of Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Many of the people of these countries also live in Korea, and even if they have lived in Korea for 10 years, there are many cases in which it is difficult to speak Korean. Still, among the Chinese, there are people who look like Koreans or Japanese, and I think the reason is that people from Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and Uyghur are mixed with the Chinese.

In summary, Korea and Japan are northern peoples, and China is the origin of southern peoples, which are close to Southeast Asian countries. The degree to which Korean and Japanese differ from Chinese is similar to the degree to which Swedish and Norwegian differ from Italian and Spanish.
