I lived in SK as an expat before the pandemic. The mindset is very different out there, SK people think everything has to be in Seoul. If you want the best hospital, school, stores, services, YOU HAVE TO BE IN Seoul. People even look down on diplomas from schools outside Seoul which is weird. In fact this hyper competition which is the root of the problem is damaging in the long run since other cities aren't allowed to develop their strengths.
I Kinda understand the people’s mentality as I am from France and Seoul is the equivalent of Paris in France. But people here in France don't think you have to be in Paris or else you're not getting anything best. In fact it is even the opposite. People in Paris wants a slower pace of life in the outer satellite cities or the smaller cities!
作为一个外籍人士，在新冠疫情之前，我在韩国生活。韩国人的心态真的很不一样，韩国人认为所有的一切都必须集中到首尔。如果你想要到最好的医院，学校，商店，想要获得最好的服务，那么你就必须去首尔。人们甚至看不起首尔以外的那些学校的文凭，这实在很奇怪。事实上，这种过度竞争正是问题的根源所在，从长远来看这是有害的，因为这阻碍了其他城市发展自己的优势。
我稍微能够理解韩国人的心态，因为我来自法国，首尔就相当于是法国的巴黎。但是法国人认为你不一定非要生活在巴黎才能得到最好的东西。事实恰好相反，巴黎人希望在外围的卫星城或更小的城市过上节奏更慢的生活。

japan suffers from the same problem as well, the only major countries who don't have this problem really, is usa and china, they have developed many cities very well.

Yes! Healthcare is affected due to this too. Doctors do not want to work in hospitals outside of Seoul so these hospitals outside of Seoul are short staffed and not enough specialists.

Glad you mentioned this I was gonna comment the same - as I Londoner I can resonate. This problem certainly isn’t isolated to SK and could name many countries with the same problem.

I live in London but from elsewhere originally. All the other cities just feel like inferior versions of London. I think you'd struggle to convince people here to relocate to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester etc.

I think so too. It's less than half the size of Seoul, but it's a metropolis the size of Berlin, and the maker of this video completely ignores it. While Seoul grew, so did Busan, but this video claims that while Seoul grew, everything else in South Korea shrank. It's not true.

Living in South Korea for almost a decade, I think that South Koreans should also drop their military-oriented culture in their office environment.
Frankly, South Korea is too fascist. Maybe that's why Japan looks rather normal.

@NamhadiNdemufayo maybe he refer to hierarchy in Korean society and workplaces. The respect towards older people got to absurd levels. While it is normal to respect older people in many Asian cultures, I think it is not normal to blindly obey to someone older than you by a year or who works in a company longer.

It is good to have multiple major cities as it makes the country more resilient, if one city fails or is nuked, the whole country won't be affected much.
