I'm so surprised that middle aged people in Hainan chew betel nut. To my knowledge, betel nut is popular in Myanmar. In Thailand it was popular in the past; now only some older persons chew betel nut. My grandmom also loves chewing betel nut; she is 93 years old.

China's cities and landscape are immense and so varied. Hainan must have incredible farms that produce fruit and grains, a sight unto itself. Can understand why people love visiting. Have traveled to China and desire another, longer visit--hope the politics calm down and more visitors can come to China. There is simply so much to see and experience.

I am glad you tried the betel nut so I don't have to. I have eaten betel leaf with beef wrapped in it when we eat Vietnamese food. But I have not tried the nut.

It's an amazing adventure to Hainan. There is a wide variety of tropical fruits and abundance sunshine, which makes Hainan a sure must stayover holidays! Never heard of filling in such a long lottery ticket but what passion for the locals. Your travel reminds us that we are forgetful people, when we are too excited to see and explore new places. Thankfully the baggage is not lost! Travelling through the city and marketplaces makes me very happy. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour! You may find that betel-nut-eating things like in all Southeast Asian countries. But in Indonesia almost no one do that anymore except elderlies, the very old people. In my country, we don't eat tamarind as it is, but rather as a mix in a dessert or soup or sauce. And the coconut you eat is already thick and a bit hard. Here we usually grate that coconut meat and use it in dessert. We enjoy eating "younger" coconut since the meat is soft and use the very old one to make coconut milk.

My wife and I spent 10 days in Haikou and Wenchang in mid January. Shes Hainanese. I can only speak broken mandarin. Anyway, it is the Hawaii of China for sure. The weather got cold around Jan 20 so maybe thats when this video was made.

As a result we have very little street food and no street vendors like what you see. So, when you drive through a town in the West you will see only a few people on the street. Rushing home from work. You will find no one with which to chat as you go on your travels. In fact talking to strangers is discouraged. In the West we have a big problem with mental illness. No wonder. Fraternization is suppressed.
