skyfishrain Pretty sure all of south east Asia does

Ken3sei Yeah it's pretty much all of Asia. The reasoning behind it is associated with class. Dark skin people typically are the ones working the fields while the Fair skin richer folks stay out of the sun.

CrabAppleBapple Used to be a thing in western countries too, until going on holiday was more of a signifier of wealth/success.

cb_hanson_III Not so much for the men. Lots of Korean and Japanese males, including professionals, are pretty tan from golfing, outdoor activities, etc. I don't think SE Asian males care much at all about sunscreen, even though for sure the ads feature pale men.

paultbangkok Yes you only need to go to the skincare sections of shops and see the products. It is a multi billion dollar industry here.

Rooikatjie242 Very rare to see a non fair skinned Thai on an advertisement too

16_Sho_Bola OP Does it extend to movies also?

SlovesTed01 Yes, as fairness is one of the beauty traits. Many actors and actresses are mixed raced as well. That's not to say they only cast people who are fair.

stingraycharles Yes, unless they need to depict a poor / unfortunate person.

Let_me_smell Yes, tanned folks tend to be used for comedic effect.

Rooikatjie242 So fucked up

COMMANDO_MARINE In the West, tanned people are associated with travel and wealth, and pasty white people associate with poor health. In Asia, dark tanned skin is associated with poor people working outdoors in the fields, and white skin is associated with wealth and being able to stay indoors. Often thai girls who stay with foreigners and go to live in western countries will pick up on the difference and will happily sun bathe on the beach when they come back to Thailand for holidays as they know how desirable it is back home in the west. I remember am ex thai girlfriend who lives in the UK getting strange looks as she lounged on the beach soaking up the sun in Pattaya but UK winters are enough to make anyone love the sun.

escopaul Great points. However much of Latin America (part of "the West") have an obsession with the fair skinned equals status worldview too.

504090 Latin America is considered to be within the global south. “The west” has a geographic element but it’s mostly a cultural/political categorization, even Australia and NZ are considered western nations.

bartturner Yes. most definitely. My Thai friends avoid the sun like the plague. So I asked them once what they would choose between a street that is sketchy to walk on but offers great shade and a street that is super safe but no shade. They said the street with shade ;) But my Thai friends also look a lot younger than myself. Apparently avoiding the sun helps with that.

SleepySiamese Women are like vampires here. They only go out at night or to malls so they won't have to see the sun. 99% of the beautity products are sunscreen or has sun blocking+whitening+whatever. At this point makes them glow in the dark or some sht.

venom-snake27 What do you mean apparently. of course that’s why a lot of white people age like shit the sun is our worst enemy so sun screen is the best thing for looking younger that’s why there are saying black don’t crack because their skin has more protection from the sun and Asian don’t raisin because again they go crazy with sun screen and avoiding the sun.

swissprice I am currently reading a book about the Thai culture and they mention that darker skinned people are perceived lower class because it is assumed that they work in a farm job or similar (working outdoors under the sun). My (Thai) girlfriend told me that people do not think like that, or at least not anymore. I guess it may vary based on the region (maybe more prent in high societies in big cities).

patrickv116 Maybe they don’t think like that anymore, but I believe it still lays at the root of the whole skin whitening phenomenon. The weird/funny thing is that in modern days, it’s just the opposite of the western world (now), where a tan skin is supposed to show that you can afford to take holidays in sunny and exotic locations, but where it - not so very long ago - also used to be the same as it is here now: a tan meant you were lower class, white “fair” skin meant you belonged to the upper class and didn’t have to work outside. Humans are silly and vain animals. We all want the opposite of what nature gave us…

vulcanstrike They don't think you are a farmer per se, but they do think they are from a farming province and therefore not from Bangkok. Thais are not a homogenous people and are divided at minimum between Northern, Central and Southern Thai, and even then you get regional splits (for example, Bangkok thinks they are better than everyone else, as most capital cities do). Basically, it's a superiority thing. Having darker skin generally marks you out as not being a native urban person and indicates you are from a poorer and less educated region. Neither of those things have to be true in reality, but you will be judged for it nevertheless, even if proven to not be the case.

slipperystar The 'invisible' social caste system. Life is easier here the whiter you are.

h9040 At some point it turns around....if you are really rich than you are free of it.

Mayoday_Im_in_love No, in the west it was exactly the same with the idea of poor, sun drenched farm workers. There was a little relaxation of the idea in the 19th Century with leisure around water. In the 60s a "healthy tan" took off with being able to show off jet set winter sun. Then the ozone layer happened. We are all victims to the culture of sun, East and West.

h9040 I agree with you on that....Just I know real rich Thais they ride road bicycle, or old motorbike, or go scuba diving or play gulf they get to really black. They don't care at all. If the millions are enough they don't play the silly games anymore. Went scuba diving with one of our customer on his private boat...he enjoys the direct sun the same as we do...Just I get red he gets black. Only the middle class worries about the social norms

Mayoday_Im_in_love So the Thais may just be using the same book as us but be 60 years behind. (At the risk of sounding derogatory t's probably cyclical so the west may be behind!)

h9040 No I see here something different...Thais tend to be brown...so they want to be white. In the west where people are white they want to be brown...Is it called "Solarium" the artificial sun for a lot money? People just always want what is difficult. If there is not enough food, the fat one are beautiful...if everyone is between well fed and obese you must be super slim to be beautiful. If everyone works in the office it is handsome to have big muscles. Maybe it is logic maybe it is some hardwired thing to increase diversity in the gen pool to mix with people who look different. Or maybe I overthink it and it does not make sense. Btw.: I just remember I have seen Thai women jogging in the sun, real runner, not pretender...very black of course. One did train for running marathon barefoot. So there are people who are outside of the mainstream...but very few

WSGman All east Asian countries do in my experience. Besides the socialisation reinforcing it in the marketing you are talking about, I think it comes from this perceived idea of darker skinned peoples being low class workers. In Indonesia it's hard to find sunscreen outside of big cities or tourist areas, but every circle k will have a tonne of different types of "whitening" cream.

lmc80 Isn't it funny how naturally darker skinned folk seek lighter skin and meanwhile light skinned westerners spend all day on the beach trying to get tanned. I guess we're all programmed to want what we don't have lMao.

bananabastard East Asia are infatuated with white skin similarly to how northern Europeans became infatuated with tanning, and arguably for similar reasons. Social-status morphing into beauty. Point of note, I've heard many tourists avoid and fear the "whitening" products on shelves in Thailand. Even people talking about always bringing their own skincare items, because they want to avoid the whitening chemicals. Well, there are no whitening chemicals in ANY of those products. It's all marketing. The ingredients being touted as "whitening" are typically plant acids, like glycolic acid, which are very good for the skin and marketed as "brightening" products in the west. Consistent use can reduce hyperpigmentation and make your skin more evenly toned. They're good ingredients.

Siam-Bill4U I have lived in Thailand over 19 years and have traveled extensively in the regions. Sadly most people sexted to promote products in advertisements or being MCs are light skinned with a rinoplasty nose. Most TV shows will cast light skin people. ( unless it’s a local TV commercial promoting fertilizer or pesticides for Isaan farmers). It’s a disappointed since there are a variety of skin colors and faces in Thailand. It’s quite comical to see underarm deodorants with whiteners. True, “lily white” farangs want tan skin.

abc_744 Look at Thai idols in kpop industry. Lisa, Minnie, Sorn, Pharita, Natty, many others. Look at Bnk48 as well. Of course Thailand has fair skin obsession just like whole eastern Asia.

Cosmopolitan93 I think it's a general thing in Asia. I'm from Europe and pretty white, I avoid the sun, not fully but when it's really hot outside. Not because I fear to get tanned, rarther because my skin sensitive and few minutes at the hot sun, my skin will show slight red dots in the sun. 2 weeks ago I was in China for biz trip. and one of our partner told our Chinese colleague that I have the perfect skin haha :D

stever71 4 billion+ people in Asia prefer light skin in their culture, including India and China. Just have to accept it, nothing to do with Europeans either.

Adventurous-Yam-8260 Excuse my ignorance but I’m curious, do they see the more commonly western white skinned people, say North European/UK etc as attractive or is it just Asian decent with whiter skin that is the beauty standard? It’s fascinating how it varies around the world.

16_Sho_Bola OP Trust me, if you're western with blonde hair, that's their gold standard.

lyca2lyca Yes it does, I just got back from Thailand and it was very clear to me after only 10 days there. I mainly saw darker skinned Thai’s during my day to day, yet in ads I only saw the fairest of fair Thai people. It’s the same everywhere in the world, Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, the Middle East. Lighter is usually seen as better. Colorism is the preference for lighter skin over darker skin and as a person of African background I can tell you it is rife in our communities also.

PlsDontBanMe_Mods White people thinking Asians wanting fairer skin is all about them, want to be like them, NO Asian have it built into them that sunray and UV are dangerous, most Asian are naturally fair and can go pretty tan when exposed to the sun. (Like me) There are some level of social classism from history meaning that if you are dark you work outdoor and are poor. The reason why most Asian look very young with beautiful skin is because we all care about our skin as you might have notice with the huge skin care market here.
