Vietnamese people look and sound like people from Guangdong (Cantonese), except even more Cantonese than the Cantonese themselves, if such a thing is possible.
The main factor is “southerness.” Typical Chinese looks are East Asian (obviously) and contain a mix of “northern” and “southern” features. The further north, the more Mongolian or Turkic-looking, and the further south, the more Austronesian/Thai. Note that I’m not an expert on ethnicity or anything, this is purely my personal impression.
Guangdong is at the southern edge of China, and was first incorporated into the imperial dynasties around 2,000 years ago. Before this, the original inhabitants of this area were the Baiyue (百越, Bach Viet, literally “the hundred [many] Viet tribes”), who would naturally look different from the Chinese people whose ethnicity and culture first developed in the Yellow River and Yangtze River region to the north.
When the ancient Chinese conquered the Baiyue regions, the colonists either mixed with the local people or continued to drive them south. The name “Vietnam” (越南) means “southern Viet” (and as a matter of coincidence, it also happens to mean “further south” in modern Mandarin). This implies that the people of Vietnam are more or less the descendants of the Viet tribes who originally lived in today’s Guangdong region and other parts of southern China.

Vietnamese look like to the people from southern part of China, i.e., the people from yunnan, guangxi, guangdong and fujian provinces.
Darker skin and shorter. I had a dozen of Vietnamese classmates back to university time - I feel the pronunciation of some Vietnamese words and Vietnamese tone in general sounds similar to the dialects in those areas sometime. Maybe it is just me who feels it, though.
There are some other answers talking about ethnicity as reference.
I want to add one last comment - both Chinese and Vietnamese work very hard in general, from low to high class, which we should feel proud of ourselves. =)

I have been to Vietnam and have some Vietnamese friends.
My friend in Hanoi looks like a Southeast Asian just with very brown skin (maybe Indonesia or Malay), so I don't think she looks like Chinese.
My friend in Ho Chi Minh, her skin color is the same as mine. If she hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known she was Vietnamese at all.
Vietnamese speak Chinese very well, and I would say it is the best in the sino atmosphere. My Vietnamese friend doesn't have any accent in Chinese and I don't know how she did it. You know, if a Japanese or Korean speaks Chinese, I can definitely tell it's a foreigner.
The economic development of Vietnam is getting better and better. A prosperous Vietnam is the common aspiration of both China and Vietnam.
我去过越南，有一些越南朋友。

Though, I do admit that in our text book every thing is like a utopia, every nations is friendly with each other. People from all other country are also friends. And i believes in none of it.
Then we have the history class, mostly all the dynesty of China. How they rise and fall. And then the that's it. I'm more on the mechanical couse more on the math and science side.
